Magic Jack LL Phone Won't Receive Calls

Post by Lurch »

Can anyone tell me why?
I went all through it the other night, and turned off automatic all screening and voicemail, then it worked and I could receive calls, but since then it will not receive calls again. I chatted with their CS rep and he didn't know what to tell me.
It seemed to work fine at first, then at some point it stopped receiving calls.
It's not a problem with my 2 land line phones, it's definitely a problem with my Magic Jack.
I recycled my router and unplugged my Magic Jack and unplugged all connections and plugged them back in again.

I have about 6 months left of my free year of service, and I'm not going to renew it if I can't get it to receive calls.
I guess maybe I should start looking for another landline low priced VoIP service.

Sorry, I have absolutely no experience using that product. I actually had to look it up to see what it was. I'm not sure what your budget is or what your financial situation is but... the wife and I have relatively new phones from T-Mo and our "Senior" and "Unlimited" plan only costs $109 a month. I would go crazy having to use VoIP.

I bought my MJ for $45 which includes 1 free year of local and long distance calling to the USA and Canada. I couldn't imagine paying over $100 a month for a phone. I live alone with my 3 cats and no one ever tries to call me anyway, but the dentist to remind me of an appt.
MJ is a land line phone.

I definitely don't think I'd want to get a cell phone.
I need to contact MJ again and tell them to either fix it or forget it.

I updated the firmware (I think) and my phone rang after I used the "call my phone" website.
So maybe it's OK now. I'll check the ringer once a day and see what happens.

I make changes and the Magic Jack phone works for a couple calls, then goes silent again.

I talked to TP Link today and they say my TPL AC750 router isn't equipped for VoIP phones, so it may be that I need to get a different router.

I'd want one for fiber optic internet that I can use wired to my Dell PC, and use WiFi for TV.
So basically the same as my TPL AC750 but VoIP ready.

personally, I wouldn't trust what a providers tech says. Too may of them aren't really tech's, they just say what they're told to say.

Lurch, have you read anything on "how to setup a router for voip calls" yet.
Have a look on this page https://getvoip.com/blog/2015/11/24/opt ... -for-voip/ - Read the whole article, some good info there.
Maybe your router settings can be changed to optimize for voip
After reading that page and checking out your router's specs I'm leaning towards an affirmative.

Good luck. Hope the info saves you a few bucks by not having to go get another router.

Interesting. Thank you. I'll read this right now.

I think it's weird that a big outfit like TP Link can't tell me how to configure their router to accept a VoIP phone.
Maybe they're just hoping to sell me a new router. ;)

I called TP Link again last night, and this time I got a Chinese girl and she was a total waste of my time.
She had no idea how to help me. She told me she's in China.

I've had an Ooma VoIP device I've been using for our home phone for may years, and it never had issues while switching different routers. It is a slightly different stand-alone device though, it connects via Ethernet to the LAN, and there is a regular phone jack coming out of it. It looks more like an answering machine, it gets its' own IP address and has an admin interface you can connect to. I did have some issues sending faxes over VoIP because of compression, but it was a service issue, nothing on my local network.

I believe the "Majicjack" is an USB device, intended to hook to a PC directly. How do you have it connected to your network?

Basically, most of the router manufacturers will not be able to help you beyond simple initial setup steps. VoIP should just work if you have network connectivity, short of some QoS settings hindering its performance.

I just went to online place to configure my router again, at tplinkwifi dot net, and I just noticed, it does have an SIP / ALG setting that I disabled. Evidently TP Link doesn't even know their own equipment.

I think Magic Jack suggested I disable it, but I couldn't find the setting for it yesterday, but it's in there. The TP Link man told me there is no setting for this on my AC750 router. I disabled it and my phone just rang. I have a feeling I'll be able to get it working now, if not from just changing this setting, then with other settings from your link.

Hi Philip,

My first Magic Jack plugged right into my PC, and that worked OK until it plugged up my PC with cookies or something that made it hard for me to hear people, and after a while ppl had trouble hearing me also so I got rid if it bc I didn't know how to improve my connection. The PC had to be on for that to be used, and it was a pain in the butt. Then I had Vonage for a while, and Basic Talk. Also had Charter phone that was VoIP and worked good, but I got fed up with Charter and left them again.

My new improved Magic Jack plugs into a USB adapter in an AC outlet and doesn't go through my PC any more and it can be used with the PC is turned off or on.
I think now that I disabled the SIP / ALG setting as recommended by Magic Jack, there is a good chance it will now work as it should.

P.S. Money is in too short a supply to spend it unnecessarily.

Hi,

My Magic Jack phone is working well now, it seems.
Seems to receive calls many times a day now that I disabled the SIP / ALG setting.
Thanks for the encouragement.
It seems that TP Link were hoping I'd buy a new router but I think this one will be fine.

Have a good Christmas and New Year.

Well, maybe I spoke up too soon. My phone would not ring again today.
So I guess I need to talk to the tech guy at Office Depot and get a different router.
Maybe the TP Link man was right after all, that the AC750 isn't designed to work with VoIP phones.
But I really want to get this taken care of and get a phone that will do more than just call out.
It rang for 2 days in a row after I disabled SIP / ALG.
Then it went quiet again for some odd reason.

Thanks for trying. :)

There is also the possibility that the MajicJack has an issue, or the phone connected to it, and their tech support are just trying to exhaust all other possibilities than having to deal with it.
Many forum posts about the issue you are having seem to suggest to use a phone with as low "REN" (Ringer Equivealence Number) and having the phone as close to the MajikJack as possible, not through extensive house wiring.
Here are a couple of links:

Interesting. I only have one phone hooked up at a time.
I have an AT&T CL2909 corded phone and an Emerson corded phone with an REN of 1.1B and 1.3B respectively.
It rang fine for 2 days in a row and then wouldn't ring 1 or 2 days, then it rang yesterday.
So what should I do, buy a new router or a Panasonic cordless phone?

The tech guy at Office Depot suggested I buy a Netgear Nighthawk AX2400 for $180.

I messages Grandstream and he told me their GWN7062 is $129 + shipping.

It didn't ring on my first try, but later I called my ISP and then TP Link again and she sent me a link on how to forward ports 5060 and 5070.

After I did that, I reset my router and tried calling my MJ line again, and it rang!!

They told me the reason I wasn't receiving calls sometimes was the firewall on the router prevented my MJ phone from ringing, and that's why I had to open 2 ports for it. It seems this time it should stay working every day.

It took me about a minute to forward the 2 ports.

I had no idea if my ISP would have been able to help me with this but they did and it doesn't look like I'm going to need a new router.
It seems to have all been a matter about forwarding two new ports.

port 5060 is a standard SIP port... Didn't know Majicjack aslo uses port 5070, interesting. Added info to the ports database, thanks for sharing. Hopefully it's a permanent fix.
