Hey, I am planning on installing winME when its out of beta, and when my friend can send me a cd with the final version on it. I Have alot of stuff right now i can not lose, so I want to hook up this computer and the old one together, not for cable, just the 2 pcs to put all my files on the old one while i format. this one has a nic in it which is connected to cable now, and i have an isa nice for the old pc. How would I go about hooking the two pcs together so its like I can drag and drop my important files from this pc right to the old for storage, and then from the old to this one after i have formatted?
What would I do, just connect an ethernet cable from the nic in this pc to the old one, then what would I do on the computer to let me do what I need to do?
Thanks!
Brian

well, we do have a hub, this computer and a 3rd are both connected on cable. How would i go about being able to drag and drop files from this pc to the other which i will bring down so its 2 feet away. It's only going to be like a 2 day thing, nothing big, just enough for me to format and get my important stuff back on.

Good post monty, but I need more detail.
First, you need a crossover cable, not a regular ethernet cable.
Second, just bind IPX and file and print sharing to the network properties of both computers. After that, right-click on the drives you need shared, then go to sharing.
That is nice to hear, I am trying to do the same thing, I bought a crossover cable and it is not as simple as clicking on the network neighbourhood icon and trying to browse the network
If you could give me really detailed step by step instructions, I would really appreciate it
Both of the computers have ethernet cards as well. I need to know the software part of it, what do I do after I plug one in the first comp, and the second in the second comp, is the a certain end that goes in a certain comp, what is the configuration that has to be done??

It may be even easier if you are familiar with computer hardware and bios settings to just reomove the hard drive from the second computer and set the jumpers to slave. Then daisy chain the second hard drive to the cable of the first then enter the bios set the PRIMARY SLAVE to auto. save and exit.
When you open windows back up it SHOULD detect the slaved drive assign it a drive letter like D and then you could really drag and drop w/o worring about the network.
Adding another drive will rearrange your drive letters (ussally sends the cd rom out one more letter and anything else after D for that matter, don't worry when your done and you remove the slaved drive the letters will go back to normal) This I think is really the easiest way to do it but then again it all depends on your experience and how easy it is to get into the cases of each computer. If you do decide to go this route you can email me and I could give further instruction also ( I would need to know the type of bios chip you have also)

I just read your post, and it is such a pity no-one has responded. May be they are all just so far ahead of you (and me) that it's not worth bothering. However, I have just posted a very similar question to yours, so may be there will be some response to one or the other of us. I am at the same stage - I've got the hardware - a NIC in each computer, a crossover cable between them - where to now?
I have so far been able to work out that you must 'bind' a network protocol (ICP/TP or NetBEUI or IPX) to both NICs, but am not too sure how you actually DO this! Once that's done, then what?
So if you have learned any more since posting your question (and it is now a month!), please let me know by replying to my post.

I don't know if this will help you or notI have two computers hub to gather. And I do lot of file swapping between the two of them.
This is the set up i have in network control panal Micosoft network Client setup-IPX/Spx-compatibe protocal-Netbeui protocal and Tcp\Ip-file and printersharing.Plus make sure
You have sharing inclient for micosoft check
and quick connect check. And in files and printing properties Files sharing Checkmarked
Plus you drive Icons in are checked under shareing for full shareing. THis might help you not sure if it does make sure you are running a firewall or some kind of pertection
Due to you are now wide open to the internet
as far shareing files. I hope this help you.
