So ya, NVMe SSDs, they are godly.

Built a new system and seeing the advertised numbers of the NVMe stuff I had to give it a try. Made sure I'd have a 4x pcie 3.0 capable slot and support for it. Didnt expectr to hit the claimed speeds(similar to how I never did with HDDs) but I wanted to get as close as possible.

The Samsung 960 EVO advertises 3200 MB/sec sequential read speed and 1900 MB/sec sequential write speed.

The actual result, well from benchmark softrware, is 3301 MB/sec sequential read speed and 1854 MB/sec sequential write speed.

Really is amazing, so my PSA is get NVMe SSDs Or at least systems that support them.

They are the ****. No upgrade has ever felt so drastic. Load times in games, photo editing software loading, large install files like Nvidia driver packages, all load up in a second.
Also, felt so weird installing it with the angled start and then pressing it flat.

You're killing me here. I'm trying to pull the trigger on a new system but I keep talking myself out of it. I'd really like that kind of performance.

Ya all the meltdown and spectre stuff was making me want to hold off, then my PC died so I had no choice, went with an AMD Ryzen 2600X.

Nice... sounds like a blast. I was considering a PCIe based M.2 when building a box a couple of months back as well, may have to do it next time around.

Just built a new rig with a i9-7920x, 2X samsung 960 NVMe's in raid 0 (just because) almost instant boot. SSD's were the cheap upgrade, NVMe's are the new new upgrades lol.

What kind of benchmarking results are you getting from those? For instance running ATTO Disk Benchmark. Just curios what the results look like.

Got an EVO myself for my latest build.. would you believe that a little over 3K for it and I only play Battlefield 1 on it - its used for nothing else.
Had a water hose bust to the CPU block a few months ago..long story there.

3K build sounds like a beast... SLI 1080s and such? Daumn, CPU block spill cant be fun, what survived out of the PC?

I like the 850/860 EVOs, I just built one a couple of months back. I used to stay away from NVMe because of cost and some older MoBo issues with boot drives, etc. but I am probably getting one for my next build.

Speaking of Battlefield... Has anyone tried WoT (World of Tanks)? It's fun, I never really got into it much but I play a bit once in a blue moon.

Look at the prices of the Nvidia 1060 6GB and the 1070, which one do you love him enough to get him. LOL

GTX 1070s are still expensive, GTX1060 should do it unless you want to mine as well, heh.

Intel (8th generation Coffee Lake) is a bit more expensive, AMD Ryzen is a bit more cost-effective build for the same performance, not sure which is better at the moment to tell you frankly. I built a Ryzen one for my daugther, but it depends how picky he is

Are you buying the case/PSU and everything?

Case - whatever he likes, some come with PSUs
PSU (if not with case) - I use fully modular Seasonic PSUs usually, EVGA/Corsair are ok too. A build like the above draws about 100 watts, the video card will draw another 100-150w when actively gaming, so up to 300 watts load, with 50% overhead a 600W PSU should be good.

GPU - ~$230+. Nvidia GTX 1050ti, 1060, or 1070/1080 depending on budget. GTX1060 should be enough to throw most current games at it, to be frank. As far as brands, in order of preference, I like Asus best, Gigabyte next, EVGA, Zotac, MSI least (just personal preference based on the ones I've bought/overclocked over the past year for mining, er, research - guilty, I know). The bigger cards with more than one fan will run a bit cooler/more quiet. For gaming, I used to run GTX 1060 6GB, switched to GTX 1080 and didn't "see" a difference.

Comes out a bit over ~$1k with everything and the OS.

Notes:
If you'd like you can throw one of those "Noctua" big heatsinks on it for ~$50 (single 120mm fan), even though the CPU at 65W TDP doesn't really need one, but it reduces noise.
Newegg has great "bundles" when you buy Motherboards, you can usually save $20-50 if you buy a bundle with the CPU and RAM, for example. If you prefer a Ryzen build, I got my daughter an ASRock MoBo as well.

Single eVGA 1080 GTX FTW card - it hardly spins up on maxed out Battlefield 1 so way more card for any current game that I can see even BFV coming soon.
Everything survived out of the PC.. what saved me was a few weeks prior I had decided for some odd reason to flush the water system (been just adding dist water here and there for years) that had been going since 2005 ish.. Yeah you heard it right that sucker has been running 24/7 for nearly 13years. Zalman fanless tower.
Well the fluid needed to be changed and everything cleaned so I did that and added straight thermaltake coolant - non conductive no water.
Flushed the hoses well but they needed to be changed..figured I could get by without replacing them.
The reason for the cleaning was cause I noticed a few days prior that the cpu water block was or what appeared to have leaked at some point and dropped a little fluid down on the PCI express slot/GPU pins area and was dried up..I was having random lock ups, restarts..couldn't tell what the deal was..figured it was the motherboard failing which was gigabyte #1 board of the year by overclockers when I got it.
So while I inspected everything I figured I'd clean all the water system as I said above. Took my time cleaning all the pins with rubbing alcohol and so on, found the water block had expanded from the water area to the solid part that sits on the CPU. The screws had come loose from heat I guess so I resealed that and was good to go.

I figured I could get by without replacing the hoses as I said earlier but I was wrong on that.
The end split open at the CPU block pouring water (not too much) as a steady stream out from the split down over the 1080, down onto the PSU and into the bottom of the case.. it was pouring out on the floor all while I was playing mind you. I had a restart...restarted and started playing again figured it was just doing it again from the board having issues. Then the video went black but I could still hear everyone talking to me. I then heard water running...needless to say I had the ohh **** moment and looked down in the dark saw the fluid going everywhere and yanked the power cord out fast.
I spent the next hour cleaning up solution and taking things apart. I spent the next few days taking the entire graphics card apart, PSU apart and cleaning every bit of solution I could find on those and else where letting everything dry out very well. I re-ordered solution and new hose this time, hooked everything back up - crossed my fingers and said a small prayer and I've not had a single problem since...just completely amazing!

I've since replaced the pump in the tower cause the old one wasn't pushing enough water thru the hoses before it just was completely wore out and I believe the CPU was getting too hot so that was why I was having the random crashes to start with. I've since replaced it with a 30gallon a day pump or larger fish tank pump that I had one heck of a time getting into the tower by cutting and resplicing the wires to get thru the original base hole, seal it up and shave the corners of the pump to fit...it was one rig job that I've never been more proud of.
So its running great now, not a single problem at all. I only run BF1 on it currently and some TF2 but its more than ready for BFV.

I reused my PC power cooling 760 which was fairly new. Prob have some other accessories in play all with Win10 Pro 64bit. I don't have anything but steam, origin, and some diagnostics progs on that machine everything else I use is on my other.

But as for the water spill... if it had not been for straight coolant I would have been screwed. I gave that stuff an awesome review!

My EVGA 970 was like that, I changed the profile cuz I didnt like not hearing them at all. lol

Brings the idle temp down to 24 C as well.

If everything else fails, just get him one of those big 34" LG monitors and a GTX1060 video card, would make a killer gaming upgrade

Heh, I guess, but it should still survive. My 1080 doesn't get used at 100% with 2 monitors @1920x1080 while gaming on one, averages ~70% GPU usage according to MSI Afterburner.
