It depends what your ISP supports, really. Usually they provide the ONU, and you get Cat5/Coax/phone jacks coming out of it where you can plug your NAT Router and devices. If your ISP lets you buy the ONU itself, they must have a list of units compatible with their system, and some type of specs, as in what connectors they use, wavelengths, etc. It is unusual for this to be left to the consumer.
It depends.. Theoretically yes, it is possible to have larger MTU values (jumbo frames for Gigabit LAN can be up to 9000bytes).
However, you should have a consistent MTU across your visible network, so I would test by pinging with non-fragmented packets to see the largest possible MTU. The TCP Optimizer has that option, or you can do it from command prompt. If you do it in command prompt, you have to note that ICMP pings have 28-bytes of headers, while TCP/IP packets have 40 bytes of headers. (the largest non-fragmented ping-size for 1500 MTU would be 1472).

To use a larger MTU, you'd have to have all your equipment (router, etc.) set for a larger size. If not, some router would have to fragment the packets and that extra work introduces delays/latency/issues.

Did the experiment. after running tcp optimizer mtu test. It was suggested that maximum MTU is 1528. Changed MTU setting is OS level, Router and activating Jumbo frames in NIC as well as in the Router.
Philip. I noticed that when I run the MTU test I only get 1 ping and 1 IP to be tested and it would immediately suggest a 1528 MTU. It would usually run 3 pings and multiple IPs. Is this a cause for concern?
