Supposed To Get 66 Mbps But Very SLow

Post by Lurch »

Hi,

Lately I have trouble with Charter Broadband. I called them and he told me to recycle my modem and router, which I did, but that didn't help.
Often times when I clink on a link on eBay, nothing happens. It will say "Connecting...." in he lower left corner of the screen, but it does nothing for 10-20 second, then I often get a screen that says "There is no internet connection".

I usually run Google Chrome. and Win 7 on an older Dell dual core PC.

Thanks for any help with this annoying problem. I could not even save things to my watch list on eBay today. I just got the "Connecting... " thing.

Cable modems usually have a diagnostics page that you can reach with a web browser where you can see whether the signal getting to your modem is within normal levels... For Motorola Surfboards it is at http://192.168.100.1 , for example, for others you can look up the hardware database on the main site.

Here is some info on where they should be, check the downstream/upstream power: http://www.speedguide.net/faq/what-cabl ... ed-good-78

Other than that, I'd separate the modem and your router a foot or two apart (most routers are not well shielded against EMI). If you are using wireless connection check to see if wired works... Also, do IPs load where web pages do not ? (this may indicate DNS issues).

There are other possibilities and troubleshooting steps, but that should give you the basics, good luck with it.

Thanks Phil. This thing is running like dial up on a bad day. :)

My modem is a Cisco DPC 3010.

I separated my modem and router more.

I will also run the cleaners and anti spywares and see if that helps. I tend to visit porn sites often and have got some scary looking pages before that warn me to call a certain ph # to get your PC fixed or something. I wonder if I may have got a Trojan or something like it.

Anytime Lurch :) A malware check is always a good idea, I use Malwarebytes, ADWCleaner, CCleaner, etc. Still, you may want to also check your signal levels. The Cisco information page should also be at http://192.168.100.1
