Whats a router?

Post by HalfLifer »

I hear all this talk about a router and I dont even know what one is! :)

Ok, now I plan on building a computer with my cousin who is going to teach me how. I play on setting up a LAN. What do I need to do this and to have internet access thru cable on both?

A router is a specialized processor that looks at packets and routes them to there destination. An router can have multiple neighbors and can advertise to its neighbors what its other neighbors are. This allows neighbors to know how to route packets to the destination.

The routers talked about on this board are being primarily used as NAT (Network Address Translation) boxes so that you can share a single IP address and internet connection with your network. They also act as DHCP servers to simplify network setup. Some even have built in hubs or switches.

If you want good information on building your own network go to www.timhiggins.com . This sight will give you great help in understanding and setting up a network.
