New Vid Card Suggestion

Post by Easto »

The new "computer/music" room has been painted. A little more detail work i.e. floor moulding etc and I'm ready to move the furniture in (a week or 2). I've pretty much decided on the specs for my new computer except for the video card. The last game I played was Modern Warfare on a C2D 3.0ghz, with a EVGA 8800 GTS video card (pretty old). Regardless, I found the video quality to be good even though the card was a bit outdated.

I'm not gaming much at all any more but I would like to have the Video power under the hood in case I decide to pickup the next FPS that comes out. As I said above, I'm coming from an 8800 GTS so any kind of jump will probably seem huge. I'd like to upgrade while keeping the cost low (<$150). From what I can see I need at least something that will handle DirectX 11.

PC Power & Cooling 750w. About 6 years old. I think it was a "Silencer" model at the time. Let me know if you need more info.

PC P & C 750 Silencer model 750W EPS12V. Has a sticker on it stating SLI Ready. DC output +12V 60a

I'm sure hoping I don't have to buy a new PSU for this build too!

I really don't remember much about it so I had to look. All I remember was that it was known to be a good solid performing PSU at the time so I bought it. I was hoping it would be a little future proof.

For the record I also have a new in the box... Coolmax CUG-700B. It is showing 3 +12v rails @ 16a, 25a, 17a respectively.

Which one is my best choice?

You should be fine with the PC Power and Cooling..that's the only brand I run now even if they are owned by a Mickey Mouse Company.

I would stick with the PC P & C. I prefer a single 12v rail to multiple 12v rails. And really if theres nothing you want right now, then wait, the fermi stuff will only get cheaper.

^^ Which cards should I be keeing an eye on? ^^

Most bang for the buck... GTX 560, 460 etc. I haven't kept up on Vid Card performance and variations at all.

I'd be watching the 570's they should be dropping in price a good bit in the coming months as that is the low end to the recommended card for Battlefield 3 :)

Ya I would watch for deals on the 570s at the lowest, anything less is already just barely gonna play the newer games at 1920x1200.
