General discussion related to Cable Modems, DSL, Wireless, Fiber, Mobile Networks, Wireless ISPs, Satellite, or any other type of high-speed Internet connection, general issues and questions here. Review and discuss ISPs as well (AT&T / SBC, BellSouth, Bright House, CableOne, Charter, Comcast, Covad, Cox, Cablevision / Optimum Online, TMobile, Verizon FIOS, Shaw, Telus, Starlink, etc.)
Posting here as a last resort before trying to find a different provider. I have been having connection problems for several months. I have had technicians out a handful of times with no improvement.
Modem: Surfboard 5120
Router: Linksys WRT54G
The problem doesn't seem to be affected if I bypass the router and hook straight to the modem.
I pay for 9Mbps down and 1Mbps up cable internet.

The signal typically looks good. The strange thing is that I sometimes cannot browse to 192.168.100.1 when the net goes down.

Your upstream may be peaking over 50ish usually when that happens the modem isn't getting anything and won't respond to that IP#. You should have someone come out and look at your lines. Be sure you have a straight shot run from the outside box to your modem - no splitters or extensions using low freq barrels.

Line has been changed about 4 months ago. Is there any likelihood that the modem could be dying? It seems really unlikely with how random it is but I'm at a loss here. Is there any decent way I can test my modem to see if anything points in that direction?
Would there be any reason I wouldn't want to run pingplotter all day while at work? Would there even be any benefit to doing that?

Appreciate the help.
If the modem is leased have them bring you another, if you own the modem then there isn't much you can besides purchase a new one, test it and sell the old one?
The modem could be going bad, i've had one fail before.
And by all means run pingplotter all day, won't hurt it one bit and will give you alot of data.
The problem starts at your home.... remove the router from it and test again?
Also make sure your not near anything that may cause issues such as a lamp or speakers near the modem or router but for now remove the router and re-test just for the hell of it.
Between 7am and 9pm my internet is just terrible. I lose connection pretty much all day. The longest I'm able to be online is maybe half an hour. It just goes out at random times and stays out until later at night and it will come back.
Also my speed is just all over the place. When downloading stuff it goes from 380 kb/s to 100 kb/s and goes back and forth.

Constant disconnects and slow speeds.

I forgot to mention that 2 technicians came out. The first one came out ran a test and said everything was fine. The second one came out and did a test and went up the street for something. He also said that the connection would go out for a day or two. It has been 2 and a half weeks since.
