Counter Strike and Updating Servers Please help

Post by Johnny Rico »

Hey everybody! Ive been visiting here for a long time and this site is really great. I finnally have a problem worth posting that I can't figure out. So here it is.

Whenever I go to counter strike "Internet Games" I have some servers shown in the server list naturally. When I go to click "update" there will be a lot of servers missing in the list. How do I know?!? My freind is on Shaw@home, I am on MTS ADSL. We will both be talking to each other on the phone, we will both update our server lists, he will have like 9830 (or something) and I will have only 3293 servers shown  Once we get into the game our pings are like 10-15 different (his being less.) on the same servers regardless of where we go. Any ideas?

Also tried to use gamespy to maybe skip the prob, and gamespy will load, but when i try to connect to a server it will start up, launch cs and then just freeze the machine when it gets to "Trying to authorize with WON.net or whatever" no probolems when launching cs byitself except for missing servers. Could these things be related? Surfing and everything else is great! :)

My computer is:

P2 450
512MB pc 133 ram
Sound Blaster 128 bit PCI
Gforce 2MX 32 MB TV out
40 GB ATA 66 7200 RPM HD
17" Viewsonic A70
10/100 Dlink NIC

I have my ADSL plugged to a Netgear RT 314 router, then to a 10/100 switch, which goes to all the machines. From the swtich all machines are 100 full. (6 machines)

Sorry everyone. All the cards on the machine have their newest drivers and the router firmware was just updated like a week ago.

Johnny-

I don't know a great deal about Networking, but I had similar kind of problem with my router and also when I used Zone Alarm while running HalfLife. I posted a question a few down this list about setting up in DMZ to solve getting my full list. But with Zone Alarm, depending on the settings it seems to freeze the servers you last viewed (before starting Zone Alarm) as the only ones you can continue to look at or refresh.

Since these will dwindle over time as some servers don't respond, I saw my lists getting smaller and smaller. I used to just turn ZA off, but recently I played with the config for it and I think I have it repolling for servers now.

So, if you are using ZA, try turning it off and see if that changes things. Or look into different settings for your router to re-ping or handle the full load of pings needed to get the whole list.

I have an SMC Barricade and it would just stop looking at servers after a certain number (around 150) and get locked up with trying to handle all those pings, so I couldn't even connect to the servers that showed up on my list for like 5 minutes while it cleared out all those pings. Until I figured out DMZ, I would just cancel the list after 100 or so. But that's a lousy option if you are looking for a particular map or something.

I don't know if this helps, and I would take anyone's advice that has your kind of router over mine. :-)

Good luck,

This might be too obvious but have you checked the advanced options (where you can select the max ping etc.) in the the CS game.

I've had the same problem you had with Gamespy so I don't thinks it's your router.
I don't have the game here at work but this is the first thing that came to mind.

It sounds like you´ve set a max-ping-filter, and after refreshing, the ping to the server is higher than the filter allows and the server disappears. This happens to me every day when I refresh a server in Gamespy. I always use ping filters, and if the ping is just 1 ms higher than the filter it´s gone off the servers list.

And just a Tip for the way...I was reading something with ZoneAlarm...have you ever been to the Help chat in Gamespy?!?!?!
Firewalls and Antivirus-Software are important, but they are the most common hazard concerning connection problems in online games. Sad but true.

Have fun ;)
