The most subjective of the subjective accolades, The Nobel committee has rewarded our president for not be George Bush, rather than for any concrete accomplishments.

Indeed, it was given to manipulate the future, rather than reward the past.

While he hasn't done much in terms of peace (IMO) the fact that he's a sitting black president with a wife that can trace back her roots to a slave family in S.C. (5 generations) speaks volumes for the citizens of the US. My cynical side wants to rip at the Nobel prize offering while my more sympathetic side is hunting for good portents in the award. At least we as a nation are getting better at not being such huge jerks when it comes to racism.

Well, if you ask some of the democrats, anyone opposed to Obama is a racist, even the ones that voted for him. Maybe we are huge jerks after all.brembo wrote:While he hasn't done much in terms of peace (IMO) the fact that he's a sitting black president with a wife that can trace back her roots to a slave family in S.C. I read one article that gave a nod to a few of the things he did as Senator and the fact he was pushing so heavily for peace as opposed to what we got from the last guy. My guess is a culmination of those things and the dislike for Bush at an International level was a big part of his selection.Leatherneck wrote:It is in no way an issue of anger for me but rather why? Do you feel he is indeed deserving of such an honor? If in time he proves worthy then great for everyone.
I would agree with this guy.
"The award is premature," said Eugene Rogan, director of the Middle East Center at Oxford University in England. "He hasn't done anything yet. But he's made clear from the start of his presidency his commitment to promote peace. No doubt the Nobel committee hopes the award will enhance his moral authority to advance the cause of peace while he's still president."
True, it's also been given to jokers like Jimmy Carter and Al Gore, so it's an award that's recently severely lacking in any credibility. And to think that they never gave the award to Ronald Reagan, a man a lot more deserving than any of recent winners.Roody wrote:The award has been given to Yassir Arafat dude. Although I don't like a lot of economic policies Carter had, he is certainly deserving for his lifetime work of peace.JBrazen wrote:True, it's also been given to jokers like Jimmy Carter ... so it's an award that's recently severely lacking in any credibility.

You clearly have reading comprehension issues. Go back and read post #14 and post #15. I have already stated more then once that it's to early to give it to him.Sava700 wrote:well obviously not but in the whole grand scheme of things that still fits the bill... So far from my reading this decision isn't getting much praise cept for those like yourself that think too highly of him.

Pushing for peace as a junior senator doesn't amount to much in that capacity however it certainly isn't a bad thing. I am truly proud that we are able to look past race enough to vote in a black president but I don't care if a person is a kaleidoscope of colors, I will rate by merit and merit alone. I've been disappointed in many and most of our leaders for quite some time now.Roody wrote:I read one article that gave a nod to a few of the things he did as Senator and the fact he was pushing so heavily for peace as opposed to what we got from the last guy. If you apologize for America long enough and loud enough you'll get the Nobel Peace Prize. This was proven when Jimmy Carter won it, and now with Obama's "award", it makes it blatantly obvious.YeOldeStonecat wrote:Although I don't like a lot of economic policies Carter had, he is certainly deserving for his lifetime work of peace.
How can Obama even accept this award with a straight face?

No, not everyone who is at odds with Mr. Obama is a racist, they only share their company. Think of it as being opposed to the Iraq war and then labeled as unpatriotic.

I have to say I'm a bit surprised when I saw this. Although I have nothing against our president I think there are probably more deserving people out there. There are so many people giving up their lives at a grassroots level I would think they could find a more inspiring story and deserving individual or group.

I’m glad the man won the award but I think it’s a bit premature and given to him because he’s NOT the worldwide much despised ex-president Bush.
Plus this also seems to degrade the validity of the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s like at the end of a t-ball league, every little kid gets a trophy whether you are a loser or not.

HE pretty much got it cause so many didn't like what Bush did although some of which was good and did help certain international issues. Its a shame he even accepted it cause now he's just going to divide the parties even more and not get anything accomplished he sat out to do when in office. He's trying too hard to be a international rock star instead of OUR president IMO.RoundEye wrote:I’m glad the man won the award but I think it’s a bit premature and given to him because he’s NOT the worldwide much despised ex-president Bush.
