Refer to the comparison tests at AV-Comparatives.org
I'd keep your Windows up to date also, keeping it up to date with Microsoft updates is just as important as your antivirus, it plugs many of the security holes.
Different antivirus brands run differently on peoples systems, try some trials of a few different ones and see which works best for you and your system.
Generally speaking, of the free ones, Antivir and Avast.
Microsoft just is almost done with their beta of MSE..which is free and better than free ones and most paid ones. You can still find the installer out there even though it's done on Microsofts site, the official release will be mid-fall around.
*Update* Microsoft Security Essentials has officially been released, and in my experience is quite excellent. Good detection and removal, light on your system, simple interface, very quiet in the background, auto updating, etc. It's my new favorite freebie AV.
Of the paid ones, AntiVir Pro, Eset, Kaspersky, and surprisingly..Symantecs 2009 product which was completely overhauled and is now one of the lightest out there.
