You guys that did as I did and got the upgrade cause it was so cheap might want to read this cause it sounds like more trouble than its worth in the long run!
If you are running the Windows 7 Release Candidate, and you have activated it, you will not need to reinstall an older version of Windows before using an Windows 7 upgrade disk.
However, you will not be able to do an upgrade installation, in which your existing programs and data are left in place. Instead, you'll have to do what Microsoft calls a custom installation. This is essentially a clean install, but your existing operating system, programs and data are squirreled away in a folder labeled WINDOWS.OLD. You end up with a fresh Windows 7 setup, but you can access that folder to get to any needed data. (Sorry, the programs in there won't work - you'll need to reinstall them.)
That's good news for folks who worried they'd have to do two operating system installations to get the final version of Windows 7 on their PCs.
But there's a catch. If for some reason you later need to reinstall the finished version of Windows 7 from scratch using the upgrade copy you bought, you'll first need to install and activate Windows XP or Vista.
This is different from Windows Vista's installation procedure. Vista would let you install an older Windows OS, skip activation, and then install with an upgrade version. You can no longer skip activation when installing Windows 7 via an upgrade disk.
In other words, it's all about activation. The Windows 7 upgrade disk will need to see a valid activation - and that can include an activated copy of the release candidate - before it will install the operating system.
This should make life somewhat easier for those running the Windows 7 Release Candidate - so long as they don't have to do a reinstall later.
Freakin stupid if you ask me.... so it pretty much means you can't use the upgrade disk and do a fresh and I mean FRESH format and install of your hard drive..you need a OEM or Retail copy for that!

maybe a little.... pretty much means I need to cancel my pre-order for that upgrade and wait for it to release and get a OEM copy instead. Sure it will cost more but at least I can install it without having to install a older version first.

I don't think they will, I had to call MS to activate an install for Xp the other day for a customer and they India Guy on the phone never asked me the usual question if it was installed on one computer or not like normal.
mnosteele52 wrote:That's pretty much how it's been with all versions of Windows with an upgrade. I'm sure someone will find a work around as they did with Vista.
This is something that should have been disclosed before everyone jumped and made a pre-order either way.
I'm downloading the 7600 64bit build now as it is said to be RTM release. Watching the Conference now as well and thats all they been talking about is Win7 for the last 30mins.

I did that a couple of weeks ago and the India guy asked every question to when I was gonna take my next crap. Pains in the ass.

Up to and including XP..you used to just be able to feed it a CD of a prior OS as an upgrade "compliance check", without installing that prior version. It would say "OK"..and you'd then remove the prior CD, put in your new one...and it would basically continue on doing a full clean install (if that's what you opted). Nothing would have to be installed on the hard drive, you could do this on a fresh blank drive.
But you can see how easily that was circumvented and basically "pirated"....people sneaking in with cheaper costs by abusing this method.

Yea, but that's how they make the $$ gotta lie 2 catch an eye. Most peeps prolly willn't hear about that and not cancel and then start b*tchin when all the sh*t hits the fan for em
Joe wrote:Where do u find that and is it clean do you know?
I got it from a torrent and its clean, I've checked it over pretty good. I've not installed it yet since I've heard rumors its still not the final build and I don't want to jump to it and deal with punkbuster without a final build to yell at them with.
We are close, but have not yet signed off on Windows 7. When we RTM you will most certainly hear it here. As we’ve said all along, we will RTM Windows 7 when it’s ready. As previously stated, we expect Windows 7 to RTM in the 2nd half of July. Windows 7 will be available in many languages from around the world. For us to consider RTM “done”, it requires that all languages be completely finished. So there is a lot of work that needs to take place for us to finalize all languages of Windows 7. We also need to get to a point of “global readiness” with our partners. Our partners being ready for Windows 7 is extremely important to RTM.
Even if the final build number is 7600, it is not yet ready for prime time. Microsoft may end up recompiling it a few times, or it may end up giving out a completely new build. In any case, whatever you get your hands on now are not the final RTM bits. A little more patience is necessary!
yeah heard the Aug date the other day.... can't wait to send in another trouble ticket to Evenbalance/punkbuster for them to support their crappy software THAT DAY!!

Odds are they still won't. Seems like they are waiting for the full release to hit and **** to be on PCs in the stores.
Sava700 wrote:well I'm not the only one that will hammer them on it the day of RTM release... they should have been supporting it since day 1 of RC release.
It makes no sense not to, I mean its not like 7 is going away, get some beta crud out there and get feedback before its released. Unless they are working on it behind closed doors odds are they'll release something and it'll **** everyone up.
YeOldeStonecat wrote:As would most other software developers. They're not obliged to support BETAs...only have support ready for the official release comes out.
But most developers start working on it ahead of time, when they get the beta so they have something for its release, I'm not sure PB is even doing that.
YARDofSTUF wrote:But most developers start working on it ahead of time, when they get the beta so they have something for its release,
Yes most would have been working on it over the past 6 months to a year. But there's a huuuuuge difference between having it working on BETAs...and having it ready for the official release to the public. There's a whole lot of other testing involved that simply having it ready based on a BETA in a lab environment can't suffice. Software developers have to deal with other software developers and their products...and this is what really takes a massive amount of time.
Some people think it's as easy as downloading some leak of the week or even the current RTM, testing on 6 workstations in a lab..and saying "OK, we're ready, it works"
There's waiting on other software developers to finalize their products to be compatible with the official release...software firewalls, antivirus, video drivers, NIC drivers, all sorts of things. Once one of those makes a change to their product a ripple effect can go out and everyone may have to update, so it's a circle of maintaining compatibility.
