Fire Ants! Ahhhhh...

Post by Shinobi »

I'm losing the war with the fire ants in my back yard.. they even invaded my
daughters sand box.. even though that has a plastic liner in it.

You guys have any experience in dealing with these? Tried Borax Acid and Sugar, ant chemical pouring it into the mounds, Those green plastic "spikes"
They still seem to come back. The only method that I have not used was digging them up and spreading them with other ant colonies..

The only other thing I can think of, is a full yard chemical strike with the broadcast spreader.

thats what I spread every summer.. prevents alot of things even helps my mosquito problem some. Granular stuff that you apply right before a rain so it pushes it into the ground.

When I lived in San Antonio, I used the product by Ortho. I was a fine powder that you sprinkle on the mounds. It smells horrible but kills the colony in 2 days.

Fire ants are the most vicious insect in the world.

Terro has always worked well for me but never had to deal with fire ants before.

Basically a commercial version of the boric acid and sugar you mentioned.

The Borax will work, but it will take weeks. The Borax works on the queens, so you have to give it time for the worker ants to carry the Borax back to the nest where the queen eats it and dies. Once the queen is dead the workers who served her will become confused and eventually die.

These ant can have a dozen queens in one ant hill. Once they get so many ants a queen will move and start another nest.

You also have to get your neighbors to work on theirs as well. No sense in you cleaning up your yard if there are any left in your neighbours yard
