Help! On boot I only have 60% system resources

Post by soonerfan »

When I start up without engaging any programs my system resources are at 60% maximum. I have a AMD K-6 350 mz with 128 mb ram. Running windows 98 1st edition. TIA

Start ---> Run ---> msconfig

hit enter

go to the Startup tab, there is everything that starts up at bootup, disable what you don't want to run, this will help GREATLY

any programs you have starting with windows that have automatic update feature enabled are real resource killers, disable function or better, if you don't need them to start on boot disable either in start up in prog.list or msconfig.

Using 40% resources? You have a VERY busy box there.

With your sys, u should be closer to 10% used.

My c@ppy little cpu is pulling a lot and there's times I have 0% of my 96mbs of ram left after boot up. And I'm lucky to have 70% of resources. And that's with just systray and firewall. Have everything a little tweaked out.

Give me a fish, and you feed me for a day, teach me to fish and I won't be so damn lazy.

Make sure you have System BIOS Cachable, Video RAM cachable, and Video Bios Shadow all enebled in your CMOS BIOS settings.
Also make sure HDD mode is set to Block and the HDD properties in the IDE Detect section or the Standard CMOS setup section of the BIOS is set to LBA.

Go to the VIA website and download the latest VIA drivers.

Load and run a program like Ram Idle (free at ZDNet.com) for your RAM problem.

Make sure you are running the latest drivers for all of your hardware.

Set your HDD and CDROM settings to DMA if they are capable of such. (windows device manager...select properties of each unit...then settings).

do this to free resources...

Click start, click run and then type "msconfig" and click ok. Put a dot in "selective startup" then remove the check marks from "process autoexec.bat file" and "process config.sys file" then remove the check mark from "load startup group items". Click the win.ini tab at the top right of the screen and click the plus sign next to "windows". Remove the check marks from anything that has "run=" or "load=". Click the startup tab on the top right and then put the these check marks back in. scanregistry, systemtray, loadpowerprofile(there are two of these, check them both), your antivirus software. For windows ME add these as well, *statemgr and pchealth. Click apply then OK, Restart when prompted.
