I've been seeing many numbers thrown out there in the media and I'm just curious as to what you all feel is the income level of an individual in the lower middle class.
Don't go by official stats....just post what you think it is.

"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'" - Isaac Asimov

Wow....I'm poor...
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.
JawZ wrote:Ok...so the figure I see thrown around and hear about on TV and radio is $125,000. $125k is considered by many to be lower middle income.
Obviously you can the see the disparity between perception and reality.
I wish I made half that. I make a quarter of that and feel I'm rich lol.
I actually agree with you .
I'm a Firefighter/Paramedic and our salary is obviously paid for each locality. Usually our pay is based on the cost of living in that locality, not a high paying job but enough to live reasonably with a decent house in a decent area. Our salaries are public record so anyone can see what we make, I don't know of many municipalities that pay their Fire/Police/EMS $125K a year, I think that amount is way too high. It goes to show what our tax laws are based upon.
I live in Vancouver,WA and a 2 bedroom apartment (1000sqft) goes for about $750....but in Colfax,WA you can get the same size apartment for about $200.
I think it's tough to measure what is low income.
Are you married with kids?
Do you have 3 dogs, horses?
Do you live outside your means?
If I made $30,000 a year and was single I'd be fine and not low income but middle/low.
$20,000 or less (to me) is getting into the low income range.

We don't starve but I have no idea how it is to live in the comfort of a $125k per year lifestyle. I wish I knew so I could say if I was truly missing out on something.
Destitute - Less than $6,000 per year
Poor - Between $6,000 and $18,000 per year
Lower Middle - Between $18,000 and $36,000 per year
Middle - Between $36,000 and $72,000 per year
Upper Middle - Between $72,000 and $108,000 per year
Rich - Greater than $108,000 per year
So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy live a little crazy!
For an individual...lower middle class I'd figure between 40-65K maybe? 125K lower middle class is ridiculous. I'd put that in the top range of middle class.

I have to agree with JB here. At least for New York.

if your making 125K here as a couple your considered rich

For the more boonies areas of VA it looks like 22-25k a year to get by. I would have thought it'd be a bit lower.
thats about right... but when fuel prices start rising over 2$/gallon people start to hurt fast since you have to drive many miles to get to a decent paying job unless your lucky. I only have to go 16miles round trip a day...I used to do only 3miles on my old job.
