Signed up and played a little last night.
Feels "fast", you don't feel any lag. My old Quake instincts came right back into place. I did feel that the netcode was a hair sloppy for "hits"....I felt many times when using the super shotty that hits weren't being registered, or even splash damage with the rocket launcher when aimed at the floor near the opponents feet.
Will have to play some more though...felt good playing Q3 again. We should get a few of us to log in one night. Gotta do a few maps with the rail gun..didn't get a chance to use that last night.
For running in a browser....pretty danged impressive. Crashed Firefox at the end though.

Requiem Mod rocked Wesleyan University used to run a great requiem server.Sava700 wrote:I liked it but I still have love for Quake 1.. the modded versions with the flinging hooks and so on.. CTF was great! I could move around a map in less than a few seconds using that thing even on dial up. I jumped to ISDN and pwned!
The alt fire on #4 double nail gun made it a flamethrower! The alt fire on #6 the turd launcher sent out the purple spiked homing vote missiles. Alt fir on #7 rocket launcher sent out the ricocheting fireballs to get people around the corner of a wall.
Yeah the grapple hook was awesome...could spider man hook across the top of a map in the blink of an eye and get up high in some dark nook to launch vore balls or lob a few flames at them til they lit on fire and ran around screaming....lol.
I used to have some config files I wrote....where some keys put up some multi-lined graphics on the chat line for taunts. Probably still have them on an old floppy disk somewhere.
No other game has had an impact to me as much as Quake 1. The first true 3-D environment. I'd love to fire it up again and play on some requiem server. It was pretty good even on dial up, I used to ping in the 140's or so to Wesleyan server. Netplex used to run a decent Q1 server I'd play on too (a smaller ISP in my state)

I'd love to fire up a server like that.. any ideas on whats needed?
Yeah I think I still have my config files for those taunts and such on a floppy somewhere too... great fun.

I never read into Quake 1 server hosting.....I got into building gaming servers around the time of Half Life, Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament.
If either of us can find some time to dig up some notes on it, hopefully there's a W32 version...I'm sure there must be, because we were able to host servers on our workstations for other on the LAN or internet to connect to. Wasn't a true dedicated server...but still, I'd think a ded one could be done on W32.
Or, man I'd love to get a good Q3 server going. Just to have a perpetual DM17 Longest Yard server going would be sweet.
Could use the SG Team Speak server...it's a P3 800 with a gig or so of RAM...way more than was needed for Q1 or even Q3.

Helrich: so i was at the diner this morning, and i was really hungry.
Helrich: i got a big plate of scrambled eggs and started eating them super fast
Helrich: when i stopped to breathe, half the plate was gone and i shouted DOMINATING!!!
Helrich: everyone in the diner stopped what they were doing and stared at me for along time until someone from across the room shouted HUMILIATION!!!
Helrich: I gotta stop playing Quake.

I slowed down a lot since it's summertime...but I'll still pop on a couple of times a week for a few rounds. Once later fall/winter weather gets here I'll be playing more I'm sure.loop2kil wrote:Anyone still playing...I see YOSC on a good bit. btw, if your mouse stops working on you....
ctrl+alt+<console key>
/in_mouse -1

How has everyone done on the skill placement?
Their are 5 tiers, somehow it seems I have ended up in tier 4.
I was reading a post that said if you can see lower ranked servers you are tier 4 or 5, as 1-3 don't allow you to join lower ranked servers.
I know StoneCat just went right through the first and easy door but I think hes up to tier 3-4 now too.

I placed high but have dropped...my skill set was based solely on instagib experience (which is unranked at quakelive) I have improved a small bit in the last couple weeks but I still get raped by 'good' players. Still getting comfortable with weapon switching and even where to bind them..heck that's half the battle.
i havent even looked into it. my biggest problem is..... well at the moment everything is a problem. im more getting used to the feel, and getting the mouse dialed in. i can't make any rapid mouse movements and wind up looking in a predictable direction.

I have no idea what I did the first time I logged in...I remember some practice mode against a bot...but I just whatever it took to get past that as fast as I could because all I wanted to do was play online.

You're in my friends list now. I think when you first send/accept an invite..the person will not show up in your friends list until the next time you log in. Or perhaps it just takes a few minutes..depending on server load or something. //shrug.Faust wrote:not sure if im doing this right. loop, i got your invite and i think i accepted. do i need to return an invite? and YeOlde... i found your profile, but same question.

Well with talking about it so much and seeing others in game talk about configs I decided to mess with mine.
Still adding binds and playing with the mouse settings but here is my config:

I can see servers that will popup "Your skill is higher" if I hover the curser over it, what I call "Silver servers". And then green servers..."Skill matched", and then what I call the brown servers..."More Challenging". So guess I'm 4.YARDofSTUF wrote:You have to install a greasemonkey script, its not something ID has made easy to find out.

Modded servers maybe? I love love loooooved the hook in Quake 1...I spent ooodles of hours playing on a server which ran a mod called "Requiem".Faust wrote:i know. there was a grappling hook in Q3A, too. didnt exist in the config menu, had to manually add/bind it in console.
I don't recall seeing it in Q3....if there's a modded server that runs one...lemme know!
