How do I remove a corrupted install of Windows Live Essentials?

Post by Epyon »

I've been going through google for hours trying to remedy this problem, to no avail. I've been getting the dreaded '0x80070643' error, stating: "Messenger couldn't be installed because we had trouble installing this requirement: - Microsoft Application Error Reporting

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed...etc etc.

It can very well be accessed, it's started, and is on automatic. I even tried stopping and restarting it as well. I also enabled a multitude of other MS services that I normally keep disabled, in the hope that there is some secret dependancy on one of them, but even with a good deal started and set to automatic, no luck...

This is even after I was thinking my 'Windows Installer' was corrupted after this, so I went through and totally removed it, and re-installed it and verified it's functionality. I'm about out of ideas here...

P.S. I even tried a Live/Messenger removal tool, however this is Windows LIVE Essentials, and thus comes up as that in Control Pannel applet, so the tools have no effect. I've tried re-installing the app on top of itself in the hope that any files which may not have been copied initially may have been copied, but it refuses to un-install via the applet.

(This is a new PC I just built, would rather not go rooting through registry keys and user data folders scavenging to clean up this mess unless I know what I'm looking for and have some confirmation I'm not leaving any remenants behind)

(Error window which halts installation near completion)

(The three entries are added after a partial <corrupted> install when selecting only the MSN Messenger from the selection menu, two of the entries: Upload tool, and Sign In assistant can be removed via add&remove applet, WLE entry cannot. When I try, I my cursor changes to 'busy' cursor, then I get no effect. Event Viewer MMC Snap-in reports this under Admin Events:

<Product: Microsoft Application Error Reporting -- Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.>

I'm 99.9% it isn't Windows Installer at fault, I uninstalled it and had to go through getting it back just to verify it wasn't the cause of the problem earlier.)

System:

Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, w/ all up to date criticals
