Overclocking my PIII 450 to ...??

Post by TheChicken »

I've been ****tin around a bit with my p3 450 to overclock it... I've got an MSI motherboard Intel 440BX... I changed the bus and cpu setting in my bios, and the thing is, that some settings seem to affect the speed, and some dont... The default is 4.5 x 100. When i put it to 5 x 100, it says at startup that it's still a 450. The same thing at 6 x 100. When i change the bus speed, ie to 133 it says it's a 600, nomatter what cpu ratio i use. so it says it's a 600 when at x3, x4, x5 and so on... The same thing at the 66 mhz bus speed, keeps saying that ít's a 300, an i can't get it between. So the thing is that only the bus speed affects my speed, and not the cpu ratio... What should i do bout it?! Change some jumpers on the mainboard or somethin?

It looks like your CPU is multipliyer locked. No matter what multiplier you use, it will remain the same (whatever your core is)

the only way yo can o/c (without hacking you CPU) is with the fsb

Yup its multiplyer locked, you'll be lucky if you can run stable at 600Mhz with normal cooling.

Yep, Intel started Multipler locking their cpu's with the Pentium 2, this is one thing they could do to help stop overclocking and such.

The only way now to overclock CPU's is by the FSB. That's why mobo manufactures like Abit in their latest board offerings have a unique clock generator that lets you specify FSB settings from 83-200Mhz in increments of 1Mhz! They are overclocking Dreams

And of course your gonna need some kick ass cooling on their, to make it to 600 on that cpu you might be able to with a Peltier....

Well, i'm running stable at 600 with normal cooling right now, but does the bus speed affects the temperature? I thought it didn't, that it was just the cpu. I'm running at the same temps that i did with bus speed at 100. Is this normal?

It should run at a higher temp than if it was running at default speed(450). But if its running stable and cool then dont change anything.
Leave it at 600 that is a good overclock for that particular chip.
