More taser news: Teen dies of heart attack after 37 second tasing

Post by YARDofSTUF »

Charlotte, North Carolina police officer is on a five-day suspension after using a Taser on a teen for too long. Darryl Turner died in March after the officer Tased him for 37 seconds, more than seven-times longer than recommended by the manufacturer of the stun gun.

Surveillance video from the Food Lion grocery store where Turner worked showed his last moments alive.

It shows a confrontation with a supervisor, and then Officer Jerry Dawson arriving and firing his Taser at the 17-year-old, striking Turner in the sternum.

"The initial use of the Taser is not in question," said Deputy Chief Ken Miller of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

For 37 seconds, Dawson continued to stun the teen.

An autopsy revealed Turner died of a heart attack.

From the story it sounds like he indeed deserved the tazing but it doesn't give any details. The fact the current was applied for 7 times longer than the manufacturer recommends suggests to me it was grossly misused and the officer should face charges.

I think tazers are useful in many situations but are too easily abused or used incorrectly.

I don't get it. What did he probably do to deserve to die? The officers negligence kills the kid and all he gets is 5 days? That's ridiculous.

37 seconds....how does the tazer not shut off after a certain amount of time. The cop needs to face charges.

The real cash is going to be made by taking the maker of the tazer to court.

/puts on lawyer cloths/

The tazer did not have an automatic shut-down setting built into the firmware. If it did, it was flawed or failed to work correctly. The cop was in a combat situation. His adrenaline was pumping as anyone in this courtrooms adrenaline would. The makers of the tazer should have built in safeguards to insure the safety of the victim. Furthermore, company X built the tazer because excessive force is the only choice given to an officer in some situations. The tazer should have been constructed to NOT apply excessive force. The officer (regardless of how much training he has) cannot turn off the adrenaline. I recommend no less than $10,000,000 to the cop for metal anguish suffered and $10,000,000 to the family of the victim.

I am sure that this kid deserved to be Tasered, but this cop is at fault. Tasers have a 5 second cycle with the pull of the trigger. The only way it would have continued that long was if the officer either kept pulling the trigger over and over again or the 5 second cycle is not working properly on the weapon.

And I know this first hand as I own one.

anymore than 35 sec is too much IMO. The cop crossed the line at 36 and was with complete disregard for the health of the tazee by the 37 sec mark where the tazer ran out of oomf

I think its high time they take these away from the police because they have been shown that they can not be trusted with them. They don't hesitate to use these on anyone without thinking of the consequences.

I would suggest that every one do exactly what a cop says until it looks like he is psycho and about to kill you for no reason lol. This day and age if it is dark outside I would suggest if you are in a unpopulated area you call 9/11 if your being asked to be pulled over and have them one confirm that it is a real cop and two let them guide you to a police station if you feel the need to be protected from backwoods mentality police.

If you happen to know an officer of the law I would suggest you use it wisely so you avoid getting your face smashed in because some want to be Barny Fife had a bad day.

Where I live all the police do is hand out speeding tickets, They are afraid of the real crooks and in turn we are now having problems with a bunch of burglaries and such. When you get caught speeding by most of these guys they act like you have just killed 20 people, Thats how bad we have it down here.

I was at work and a guy came in asking if I had decided who I wanted in for Sheriff in the next election and I gave him a spiel about how the cops are around here not knowing that he was one lol. He agreed with me and told me about this current detective that is going to run against his current boss. He said the current sheriff told all the deputy's the other day that crime was not his job. :wth: Having said that all the current police are voting for this other guy and I will be doing the same.
