modem defaulting to wrong com port

Post by rgilley »

I have installed a pcmcia modem in a friends laptop. I can get it to work but the speed is slow slow...less than 3k I checked the setup on the modem and it shows it as being installed on com port 3. All I show installed on the laptop is com port 1 and 2. How do I change the com port from 3 to another number.. thanks

Com 3 is ok, it shouldn't make any difference. I only have 1 com port on my Laptop but in device manager I have 1-4 which is normal for all PCs. If the modem is working then you don't need to switch. The slow speed is some other factor. What speed does it connect at? Have you tried different lines? Different numbers? I don't think the Com port is all that important. For a 56K modem 3KB/s is not to bad

Ok, What do you mean by connected at 3k?

If you mean you download at 3k thats good
if you mean your connection box says

Connected 3000bps thats bad :0

your Connected at box should be somewhere between

28,800bps --bad line
50,000bps --supper line

You can never connect at 56,000bps it not allowed. (great to sell somthing that will never live up to its name huh)

When you download you might see anywhere from .1 to 5.0 kbs which is normal.

as for the drivers. who makes the modem? can you get the latest greatest drivers? Are you using the right driver for the right modem? If the generic drivers work then it souldn't be hardware.

Try removing all the drivers and swap the modem hot. see what the PCMCIA device sees the modem as. Hope this helps.
