great, thanks for the replies. i think i'm going duron 600 or 700 (prices) with the abit KT7A and a FOP-38. Where can I find this processor for sale? I can only find the Duron 800 (750 is there too) at 200MHz fsb. If i get the Duron 800, where can I get 200MHz ram?

one problem though; mom (building for her) wants to do nullVIDEO EDITING (eek!). we have a new sony camcorder and a kodak digital camera.

Is the amd processor going to be able to handle this?

Even if it does, what video card would you reccomend?

And is 256mb of pc133MHz RAM going to do the trick?

whats the price including a case going to look like?

AMD Duron 600 on abit kt7a w/ FOP-38
WD 30.0GB EIDE ULTRA-ATA/100 7200RPM(enough?-video editing) --- $140
Crucial 1 DIMM of 256mb SDRAM, PC133 --- $90
*** reccomended video card ***
Sony 32X/8X/4X REWRITABLE ------ $140
Memorex 52X READER EIDE/ATAPI INTERNAL CDROM-- $45
Turtle Beach Montego 2 ---------- $35
*** reccomended case ***

I really appreciate all your help. Thank you.

there's a overclocked and tested Duron 600@950 to 1000Mhz at HERE. they have a lot other stuff, main site is HERE . It should be pretty reliable to buy it online.
I believe u need a video in card to do video editing. I m using this ATI rage fury pro 32MB with video in and out cost me about $150 canadian, so that's about $100 US. It gives not bad graphics for gaming, so it's a good card to consider.

How much are u willing to spend on this new com though?

PC133 ram willl do the trick. And 30GB should be enough, u can always add a bigger one later.

I threw in a ATI rage fury card and threw in a 70 bucks case, should cost u no more than $800

800 bucks would be the low end cost, look for antec or enlight cases at pricewatch.com and buy.com they are nice, case will be 60-100 bucks depending on howmany bays u want and stuff i would think u should be all set for under 900 if u go with the ati rage pro, but i think there is radeon vivo or something that would be real nice for teh video editing, wait for someone to confirm this though! but that would cost more.

Buying Duron 600 and Abit KT7A

Post by el bob »

I'm looking to build an office-based computer running quicken, ms office, and the like.

I was thinking about a Duron 600 OC'ed to about 800MHz on an Abit KT7A. Artic Silver thermal grease and a new heatsink+fan combo.

An IBM Desktar or a Maxtor (cheapest one wins) Ultra DMA 100 7200rpm 20gb drive should do the trick.

Any hardware suggestions for what fan + heatsink combo I should use or tips on the overclocking?

Thanks for all and any help. -el bob

when i have the final system on paper, i'll post it in a new thread.

once again, thanks for all your help. i'm lucky i found this place.

one last question...

if i bought the duron 600 from them, I would still have to buy my own heatsinkfan?

its just that the chip's ability to overclock has already been tested?

is this pre-tested (i like the idea) chip going to be any more expensive than one that hasn't been tested?

thanks again :)

I have a Duron 600 at 1000 on my stepson's machine (A very noisy fan and heatsink with Artic Silver.....

I would suggest paying a couple of coins more of a T-bird... You get a larger cache (256k vs 64K I believe) and the can rev a little bit higher!

I use my beast for video editting. I have a pinnacle board and a radeon vivo. I edit with Premiere...

i'll compare the retail price of the chip against the ocz chip. i'm probably going to end up buying the ocz chip because i really like the pre-tested idea.

i'll probably be going with the Globalwin FOP-38

for the video card, i'm going to check those two out and possibly some diamond video cards

i'll post with results

thanks :)

T-bird 700's are still bouncing about and can be had cheap! They are also OC/able to over a GHz....

The Radeon 64 VIVo is a fantastic board for the price!!! I love mine.

If u buy the retail version on the chip, it comes with a hsf, but it's not so great. Recommand you to buy another HSF, like a Globalwin FOP-32 or FOP-38 if you are planning to overclock. Compareing Rage Fury and Radeon, Obiviously Radeon is going to be better, but you are going to pay more $$. Oh ya, the T-bird is more OCable..there's a guy at another forum Overclocked a T-bird 1.2Ghz into a 1.645Ghz.

Radeon is a excellent card for it's price, but compare Rage fury and Radeon is like comparing Celery and P4 big difference in price and performance. If he's jsut looking for VIVO, i personally recommand Rage fury...very good for it's price.
