Server admins/ Network admins/ Desktop Support

Post by 24giovanni »

Just curious, what software tools do you see as essentials to having in doing your jobs? Which ones do you use? I appreciate all recommendations. I know it depends on what one is trying to achieve. I am just looking for the best ones.

thx

Kaseya and Bomgar are pretty much the top 2 for managing many different networks.

I use the Remote Web Workplace for many of my clients since they run on Small Business Server..allows me to remotely connect to users desktops and assist them.

For other small, or stand alone, remote users...I was using GoToMeeting to connect to them remotely..recently built an "Echogent" server that allows me to do it quicker, and no more cost to me...since GTM was 50/month.

Thx Stonecat. If you or anyone else can think of anymore, they are welcomed.

Microsoft released a tool not long about...the "BPA"...Best Practice Analyzer.
I use the ones for Small Business Server..and for Exchange Server.

It's a tiny program you download/install...update it for latest info...and then run a scan...it generates a report for you of issues..and fixes/tweaks.

Maybe I misread the intent of your post...I saw "desktop support"..made me think more of remote support tools. Are you looking just for things in your bag of tricks to work on computers you're in front of? Or remotely connect to clients? Or run on servers when you're occasionally onsite or remoted in?

Ahh...we had a thread going like 2 years ago....what us IT guys keep in our "Bag o tricks"...but taking a few seconds to search..didn't find it yet. Hard to come up with a list...as every day I could stumble upon tools that I forgot to mention.

So we'll keep revisiting this thread a few dozen times as we remember tools we use.

A recent remote utility I recently came across... mRemote.
http://www.mremote.org/wiki/
Which is a universal client that supports connection to VNC, RDP, SSH, Telnet, RLogin, etc.

On a USB thumbdrive...I have a few Gizmo drives that I usually have various tools on. (frequently updated with latest versions)

TCP/Winsock repair utility
Malware removal tools....Spybot, AVG AS, SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner. SDFix
Antivirus..freebies..AntiVir, AVG, Avast, CA,
Installers for Pay For antivirus..Kaspersky, NOD32
Antivirus removal tools

Software that I use for building computers..utilities so I don't have to go run out and download them...such as Firefox, FoxitPDF, shockware, java, flash, QuicktimeAlternative, RealAlternative, GoogleToolbar, operating system and ms office service packs, OpenOffice

Latest firmware for popular routers that we usually have at clients
