Network times outs

Post by cajundon »

I getting a lot of Network timesouts while surfing the Internet. I'm running Win XP Home SP2 with Firefox 2. My DSL ISP is BellSouth/ATT.

42 pings gave errors or timeouts. 91 from 103 IPs were reachable.

Also eBay takes over 5 minutes to sign in.

I have not made any changes to my network.

What do I do to correct this? It is very frustrating :irate:  .

have you called your ISP to see if they have a problem in your area?

Yes I have checked with them, and they say nothing is wrong at their end, which is the usual response, unless there is a major problem.

Thanks YARDofSTUF. :thumb:

Not a traceroute. Post a tracert.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

Packet losses at the modem in hop 2.

Turn off power to the modem for 10 mins. Relocate it a few feet away from ALL other electrical devices, including away from the router to avoid electrical interference.

The power on the modem and do another tracert to see if there are still '*' at hop 2.

Try getting a new CAT6 cable for comp to router/modem. Do not coil up any power and signal cables.

I have already tried that. I have brand new CAT6 cable on most of my 8 computers in my network, and change out with a new one on my server to make double sure.

The second hop is to Bell South's DSL Fastaccess.com. It is a problem with BS/ATT, and they don't want to admit it.

I will contact BS again, and ask to speak to a supervisor, to get my issues resolved. I keep getting," nothing is wrong" with the low level C S. This has been going on since I installed my new server in Dec. 2007.

Thank you very much for helping me.

The first hop is the ping from comp to the router part of your signal device. That is why its IP address is that of a router.

The 2nd hop is the ping from comp to the modem part.

The 3rd hop is from comp to the ISP's switch in your locality.

Packet losses is happening between the comp and the modem. This is at your end. If cause for packet losses is not interference, nor defective cable, problem could be with the modem.

Since you have 8 comps in your LAN, see if they show similar packet losses at hop 2 in their tracerts. Is so, problem is probably with the modem.

Ok trogers, I did try one other computer in my LAN network before you suggested it, and I had the same packet loss in hop 2, so I will assume that it is happening with all of my computers in the LAN. I have 3 PS3 in my LAN running Folding@home 24/7, so I can't check them.

I have reseted my modem/router physcially and with software for BS several times. I also have the latest drivers and firmware available. So I will tell them my modem/router is defective.

You have been very helpful in me understanding what the issues are, and I appreciate it very much.

I will let you know if my issues have been resolved with another modem/router.

Take care.

I called technical support and they will ship me another (new or refurbished) modem/router within 2 days, without me having to ship the old one back at my expense.

Again, thanks for all your help. and suggestions.

The 2nd hop is the ping from comp to the modem part.

I received a new 2Wire ADSL Wireless Gateway/Modem. The old Modem was a Wireless Westell VersaLink 327.

I still have the 2nd hop losing the packet with the new 2Wire ADSL Wireless Gateway/Modem.

Could this be a problem with my built-in on board NIC going bad?

It could be if you have only one comp connected. But if the other comps are showing the same problem, it is unlikely their Nic are similarly defective. Any coiled up cables in your setup?

No coiled cables or power cords. All cables drop along the floor, then back up to Router/Network switch, with no loops.

Network switch?

Try connecting just one comp directly to the modem/router while placing the modem away from ALL other electrical device, and check out the tracert. The set up would be

1 comp -> modem/router -> splitter

I had already tried that with my main newest desktop pc.

This is weird. I decided to check all my 4 desktop pc and one laptop pc with tracert. All except a Compaq desktop pc, were losing a packet in hop 2, which are all connected to the same gateway/router then the network switch.

All pcs are running Win XP Home SP2 with ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

I do not know how to run tracert on my 3 PS3s.

Zone Alarm?

Try uninstalling this Microsoft patch and see if solves the problem - KB941644

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Does your Compaq have this patch and Zone Alarm as well?
