Fortunately, none of my home locks are prone to the bump key. I did test it.

Well, I would think that they would think twice about bump keying my door. If I only had one lock, it would be quick and easy access, but I have two dead bolts and a door knob lock. Now, they have 3 locks to open. If I have to throw in a few more to deter them, I will. I don't care if it takes me a few minutes to unlock my door.
At first I wondered why you'd need 2 deadbolts, but then I took a look at your location.Debbie wrote:Well, I would think that they would think twice about bump keying my door. I have one regular keyed entry and one deadbolt from Brinks. Now I don't know if they're bump proof prone, but I'm not really worried about it. I could leave my doors wide open and nobody would ever dream of stepping foot on my lawn with ill intentions with the 2 behemoths I have patrolling my house.

While technically "true"...it's quite a stretch as to the % of effectiveness.
The internet "lore" has hyped this out of proportion. First..the key has to "fit". Alllllll the various brands out there knocks this down by a huge percentage.
Next...the pin pattern inside has to be close enough for a "sloppy fit" for this bump technique to actually work.

Have you tried this yet? If you can put the key into the cylinder and time it right...YeOldeStonecat wrote:While technically "true"...it's quite a stretch as to the % of effectiveness.

Spent around 7 years on a job where lock maintenance of a huuuuuge lock system on over 85 acres of buildings was part of my job...big key system, etc. Maintenance/repair/upkeep, controlling keys and access, was part of that job..of their lock system. Used to take them apart and repair on a regular basis.Ken wrote:Have you tried this yet? If you can put the key into the cylinder and time it right...
I can see this only happening on well worn systems..where the end of the pins is a bit rounded....the springs are broken, and the lock is in a position where the pins would "fall" due to tapping.

I can open a master lock in 10 seconds with a rag and hammer and leave no marks, can you?YeOldeStonecat wrote:Spent around 7 years on a job where lock maintenance of a huuuuuge lock system on over 85 acres of buildings was part of my job...big key system, etc. Maintenance/repair/upkeep, controlling keys and access, was part of that job..of their lock system. The bump does work if the key fits the cylinder, by nature of how locks work, as you should well know...
Locks are only for honest people anyway, take someone like me...
Not on a bet. After all those shots I had to take last time... I'll leave you in the gutter where I found you. In a pool of your own barf.Ken wrote:take someone like me...![]()

Sounds like a chastity belt my wife owns. You can bump that door all night and not get in.Debbie wrote:Well, I would think that they would think twice about bump keying my door. A quality lock and deadbolt that are not bumpable would be all you need, add a reinforced strike plate for good measure, then move on to making sure any windows are well secured.Debbie wrote:If I have to throw in a few more to deter them, I will.
