thunderbird850 FSB?
I was thinking about getting an msi k7t turbo with a thunderbird850. It's either that or this other board that's kt133 based with the same cpu. The thunderbird850 is really the most I can afford, but I'm curious if it's really worth the money to get the kt133a based mobo running only 850. The difference in price between the two boards is around 50 and I also need new memory and a soundcard. Those of course can wait, but will the thunderbird850 really use the fsb266?

Well I just recently upgraded my whole PC to a Thunderbird 900 w/a ASUS A7V133 board. I'm still stuck in the mind set of the old socket 7 boards. I took avantage of the RAID0 on the board with 2 30gig Western digital 72000 RPM ATA100 and I have to say this is the first PC that I'm impressed with for speed. According to Sandra the board is running at 202 FSB and I'm clocking the CPU normaly. no OC, just 9 X 100 and Sandra sy'a it's running @ 908mhz. I'm sure if you get the 850 and tweak it properly /unlock it and use good cooling you could prob get the 266mhz FSB. I've seen posts of ppl having a 600 duron and gettging dam close to 1gig mhz out of emm.

u'd have to overclock to use thz 266mhz fsb, i believe teh tbird is set at 100mhzfsb(200mhz ddr) u need to up the fsb to 133,mhz(266mhz ddr) and lower the multi to like 6.5 and run at 864mhz or so. the difference between that and teh 100x8.5, a good ammount. u could do that with either the tbird or duron. get whatever cpu u feel is better, my 1 ghz duron out performs the sisoft sandra athlon 1 ghz, but i know u dont like overclocking, which is why i suggest loweringthe multi and up the fsb, more fsb, more power, not only in speed, but for ram as well, good luck.
Hashman, what do u mean it wont support 266mhz?

I thought the ram was all alone in pushing up to 133. oh... I see. So, if you were to bump the fsb up to say... 110; the thunderbird's fsb would run at 2x. So, you'd have 220 instead of 200. I see!! So, if I buy a thunderbird 850 and I cant afford the risk of heavy overclocking it's not worth then money to buy a kt133a board. The money saved will be well spend on either an oem soundblaster live or crucial 256meg cas2 pc133.
thanks for all of your input.
I've found an ecs k7vza(it's got very good reviews) with a thunderbird850 for 194. Anyone know of a better deal? I'm willing to spend a little bit more if need be. thanks!!

I have an Abit KT7A (non-raid)which supports 266 Fsb. I unlocked an 800 duron and got it to run @ 1050 very stable. Of course you need some quality ram to do so. With 256 mb of Kingston fastest PC 150, I could get a 3D Mark 2000 score of 6674 in (1024x768-16 bit). This Duron was OC'd @ 7.5x140 w/ a 35mhz. pci bus. I now have a Tbird 1 gig. running @ 10x 130 (32mhz. PCI)=1.3 gig. and the 3D Mark score is 8730. Over 2000 points difference is alot in 3d mark 2000. Now as far as cost you can get an Abit KT7a for $125, or a cheaper board for $100. I think the extra $25 is well worth it to get the best Mobo out there. As far as CPU, the duron 800-850 is great and the Tbird (socket A) is greater. Take my advice, learn to unlock, its easy, use a conductive pen(ink) not a pencil. Check out some Athlon overclocking websites that show you the do's and dont's. And by the way the difference I got was 24% between the 2 cpus, but the cost was $80 for the duron and $205 for the Tbird.

yes, but I can get an msi kt7 turbo with a thunderbird850 for 243 plus s+h. That's basically the same as the abit board you're talking about. Know of a better deal anywhere?

When you guys up your FSB, how do you keep the AGP bus down around 66. I know how to keep the PCI bus down. The AGP bus runs 2/3 of the FSB. If you OC to 133, the AGP bus is now at 88, too high for alot of Vid Cards. Mine wont work with a FSB of 133. I do have a seperate line in BIOS to up the FSB independently of the PCI bus. Maybe that is also independent of the AGP bus. I need to try that.
