Overclocking Pentium 3s

Does anyone know how to overclock Pentium 3? I have a Dell Dimension XPS T500. A 500 Mhz Proccessor. I can't explain the posistion of it but the proccesor is long and its not those square socket types.

I believe what you have is a Slot 1 (SECC2) setup. P3 chips are "multiplier locked", so the only way to overclock is to adjust the FSB (Front Side Bus). To do that, you need a motherboard with a BIOS that will allow you to do that. It also helps to be able to adjust the core voltage which helps with stability when you increase the FSB. Of course, that requires additional cooling. You may also need faster memory since the memory speed is directly affected by the FSB speed.

So, unless you want to do this just for the fun of it, I believe it's cheaper just to buy a faster CPU/Mobo combo.

Ragnarok, MailmanX is correct about the multiplier. I have a 500mhz PIII with PC 100 ram and have bumped mine up to 585 mhz by increasing the FSB. (without any additional cooling) and it stayed stable. But I would not suggest doing this unless you get some extra cooling. I never keep mine set that high. I just goof around with overclocking from time to time to see what figures I can get (usually in the mid 500's and I can leave it there). I us a Soyo 6BA + III mobo and the FSB settings on this board are made in the Bios. Depending on your board you may have to do the jumper setting thing on the Board.

i got a p3 500 slot 1 at 600mhz, i got the frontside bus at 120mhz with pc 133 ram, got a 80mm 12volt exost fan and i got one of those big radio shack 80mm 120 volt cooling fan blowing to the processor........got a abit BE6 mombo

Had my slot 1 450 PIII at 600, was good and stable but, as i use mine as a server, i just run it as a 450@450.
More cooling the better if your gonna pump it up

I was never able to get my P3-500 past 560 no matter what cooling/voltage I used. It ran rock solid @ 560 though.

I don't know about Dell's specifically, but I know there are plenty of proprietary mobo's that won't allow changing FSB in the BIOS. That's why in my post above I included this quote: "...you need a motherboard with a BIOS that will allow you to do that." I was covering the fact that it may not work for him.

But I imagine it does get pretty old answering that question over and over and over...

Even if I had the knowledge, I don't believe I'd have the patience to be in any type of hardware or software tech support. I have tremendous respect for what you do. And thanks for all the great support you post on this board!

bah, did no one notice he said he has DELL??? ok, maybe no one works on dells all day like me but YOU CANT ACCESS THE FSB OPTIONS IN THE BIOS. sorry, I answer this question like 10 times a week on sorted boards. But no ragnarok, you cant overclock your machine without the use of a program called softfsb written by H.Oda from Japan. I dont even know if he has your motherboard clock generator programmed into the software. do a search @ altavista on softfsb and it should turn up a site you can use. Dont expect anything grand though. Whenever buying an oem machine they warrantee them well so they disable lots of tweaks that could harm the covered hardware.

I got my old AMD-K6 500 running @561 stable and can go to 575 still ok, but when i get into some games like NHL2001, blue screen comes up.. i tried to rise the voltage, still don't work. Any suggestion? i would love to get this crap running at 600, or 561 is the maxium already? By the way, when i put the jumpers in 120 x 5, "Invalid system disk" message pop up when boot up. thx

k6 series cpus don't usually go much more than +50mhz..so consider yourself lucky
