NETBEUI or wired bridge
NETBEUI or wired bridge
I have a small lan of 4 win98 computers all wired and an additional 2 XP machines wired 250 feet away. The XP computers are used to fix up old motherboards and play.
The one router is hooked in near the 98 comps.
Now all users can see and use all files on all comps. Iwould like to isolate the XPs with NETBEUI. Then the XPs would have full sharing and the 98s would still have sharing amoung thenselves.
I installed NETBEUI but the properties is greyed out and is not useable.
Can anyone help me get NETBEUI working?

JackMDS might have solved it. NETBEUI properties is supposed to be greyed out.
No I want the XPs to be blocking the 98s but the XPs to have file sharing between themselves. Like having two lans sharing one router and not seeing each other. I've read that a bridge can do that but they are hundreds of dollars.
I have used JackMDS instructions and will see if I can get the XPs sharing alone.
Thanks for your fast reply.

Ahh good...when you said "not usable"...I thought you meant the checkbox wasn't available to bind. Yeah, there's nothing to configure with NetBEUI as far as properties.
Since you only wanted to prevent the 98 machines from seeing the XP shares...I'd not even both worrying about NetBEUI..just use user accounts/permissions on the shares on the XP boxes..leave 'em all TCP/IP.

It's me again. Same question but now it's all larger.
isp-modem-router-16 switch-10 local boxes+250 feet cat5e-16 switch-10 boxes[research].
The research boxes need to be hid from the "home" boxes. Netbeui worked but the research boxes were slowed down.
I would like a hardware solution to this problem. Would a Smart Switch work?
D-Link WEB SMART DES-1226G or something like it.? Cant find a bridge .
A bridge would work?
Some thoughts please I'm stuck. The hundreds of dollars isnt as important as availability.
