Anti-Vir Problems

Post by Qui-Gon John »

A few days ago, I loaded Anti-Vir on a friends Vista computer. It would not run update. When I clicked it, I got the spinning wheel for a few seconds then nothing. I tried the repair, from Program and Features, (I was going to uninstall), but after same thing.

Also, on my Vista laptop, my update runs, but says it can't connect to any of the servers, (says no internet connection). Yet internet works fine on the laptop.

Any ideas?

Well the second issue must have been a problem with Anti-Vir's servers. I tried the update this morning and it worked.

Any ideas on the first problem?

They sounded like the same problem to me, the update servers for the free version do get overloaded at times.

Maybe, but problem number 1, the box for the update, (where it shows connecting and the progess bar, etc.), never even comes up.

Now on mine, last night, that box came up, and after a minute or so, it said it couldn't connect to the internet.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Next time I see this guy I'm going to try it again. If it still does nothing, I will completely uninstall/reinstall Anti-Vir.

I just went back to this guy and uninstalled Anti-Vir, ran CCleaner, then reinstalled Anti-Vir, same problem. You click Update, you get the "waiting" cursor, (spinning wheel) for a few seconds, it goes away, then nothing else happens. It never pulls up the Update window. I even tried it after I turned OFF UAC and rebooted, same thing. As far as I know, there are no other anti-virus softwares running on the machine.

Any other ideas?

Might have had Norton, I can't recall. But if he did, I would have run the Norton Removal Tool before I loaded Anti-Vir.

I installed Anti-Vir on another Vista computer and am getting the same symptom as the one where I mentioned the problem above. It would not run update. When I clicked it, I got the spinning wheel for a few seconds then nothing. I mean not even the box that pops up to show you how update is trying to connect to the server or anything. I uninstalled Anti-Vir, then reinstalled it, same thing still.

It works fine on my Vista PC. This has got me baffled. Help!

I figured the problem out, I had the same thing happen on a clients Vista pc and here is the problem/solution:

For some reason AntiVir doesn't install itself in the proper location in Windows Vista, I found this fix on their forums. Make the following into a .reg file by copying and pasting it into notepad and then naming it antivirfix.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Folders]

"Common AppData"="C:\\ProgramData"

Once you have made the file merge it into your registry by double clicking on it. Once you have added this line you can install AntiVir and it should update and work properly.
