Wierd connection loss with Cable

Post by mbonc25 »

Hello

I have been a user of cable for a few months now. I am experiencing a problem with connection loss. Connection loss doesnt happen all the time but it happens at the most random of times. I have no clue what could be causing this problem. When I get disconnected, all the indicator lights on the modem remain green. I have tried 2 different modem's to see if it was a problem with the modem.

Here is some information about my connection:

Modem - Dlink DCM-202
Advertised Connection Speed 6000 DOWN 256 UP
I get 5800~ DOWN 235~ UP

Downstream Signal
Frequency: 837000000 Hz
QAM Mode: 256 QAM
Channel Power: 0.9 dBmV
SNR: 33.938 dB

Upsteam Signal
Channel Id: 6
Frequency: 36000000 Hz
Channel Width: 3200000 Hz
Channel Power: 37.8 dBmV

I also have a router installed: Dlink DGL-4100

Thankyou for your help in advance.

Well by looking at those figures, that not too bad, you won't get the max you are promised, that only happens if you are litterally right next door to the Central Office of the cable company where the line is terminated.

Questions for you:

1. When you get the random disconnects are you having bad weather at your place or around the cities in which you reside?

2. Did this start happening recently or has it always been this way?

3. When you get disconnected are you able to reconnect when you are disconnected?

4. What do you do in order to get reconnected?

Now with these questions, there is a possibility that a timer on your system kicks you off after a certain amount of time has elasped. What do you do on the Internet?

Streaming media, games, browsing (ummm duh, stupid question I know), file transfer (like Bit Torrent or another application), etc.?

I've been having the same issue for 2 months now.. and till I called the executive office of comcast they weren't getting anywhere to fix it.

I monitor mine using pingplotter from http://www.pingplotter.com

just set that to 1second trace intervals and trace to some place like http://www.comcast.net

then watch the action which you will have a graph at the bottom to show the issue... run this for a few hours prior to a tech coming to the house and show them any and all red bar spikes you have which is just plain ole PACKET LOSS

this is what your getting and causing the solid drop in connection. Its mostly caused by noise but I tell ya once I find out what my problem is I'll let ya know.

To answer your questions:
1. I don't notice any bad weather, during these disconnects.
2. This began since i started using Cable Internet.
3. Yes I am able to reconnect
4. I have to either wait 3 Mins +- OR Unplug the power cable of my modem and plug it back in.

Live near any cell towers? (837mHz)

Id go through and check all your cable connections all the way to the drop.

Is your coax grounded anywhere? It needs to be.
