welp i have win2k with ntfs installed, and am thinking about going back to win98 (not SE), i have a 27gb hard drive, and using partitionmagic 5.0 to partition it into 2 13gb (approximate) partitions, one each for win2k and 98. the problem is on how to setup a dual-boot. is there any type of boot manager i could use to have a menu where i can choose to have win2k or win98 booted? this is without formatting and reinstalling win98 first, then win2k. been there, done that, got the illegal operation tshirt. i know i can manually do it in fdisk by setting the primary boot partiton, but this gets tedious easily.

I am a little lost as to what you have set up now. Win98 on c:\ and W2K on d:\????
W2K has its own boot manager so I am not sure what the problem is or why you don't have it (the screen that gives you the choice of OS's on boot up). Have you tried (from a boot disk) typing sys c: from the c:\ prompt and then running the W2K REPAIR OPTION?

I might be a little confused but if you installed the PartitionMagic and Bootmagic it should give you the option of which O/S to boot (?)

ah-HA! bootmagic must be the answer. i have partitionmagic, but never installed bootmagic.
but my setup is basically win2k only installed on C:, win98 not installed at all yet.

The easiest way to dual boot between 98/2k is to keep the file system set at FAT32. This way they both will see each others files and folders. But who wants that!?! we want to use NTFS for 2k right? right..
All you do is install 98 onto your first partition C:\ once its done slap in your 2k disk and choose 'not to upgrade' -'clean install' choose the drive you want D:\ It will ask you which file system to use and how much space you want to set aside for 2k. It will automatically install a boot loader to the MBR of C:\ this will allow you which OS to choose from at startup. That's it! easy enough. Just don't forget that if you choose NTFS for 2k, your 98 will not see any files from 2k. Btw, bootmagic is ok for a bootloader, i prefer NT's bootloader better.
