I currently I have Linksys WRT54G router. All 4 wired ports are now in use of which one is for my computer.
Now the thing is I plan to separate my computer to two computers. One to be a 24/7 server to do bittorrent and hold all my files and such and the other to be my gaming system to go SLI and all the other power hungry stuff (not 24/7).
What would be best way to do this? I was thinking a gigabit switch connecting to the router and the two computer. Would this work?

It would work...yes. Any benefits from how you're setup now? We can't tell. Both PCs have to have giga-bit NICs. Extracting giga-bit performance from PCs can be bothersome..there are a lot of factors here, such as jumbo frames, what kind of giga-bit NIC you have, what bus it's on, if the rest of your PCs hardware can handle it, etc.

Well I have a DFI Ultra-D motherboard on my current computer. I currently use my computer as a server and my gaming computer. I just upgraded the video card but with the future of gaming becoming more power hungry and demanding, it is kinda a waste of power to leave on 24/7 for my downloads. Which is why I plan to buy a 2nd computer just for handling the files so I can go all out on my gaming one.
It's wireless router.. WRT54G
If you have Internet connection with high bandwidth and play network game at home agressively, then buying gigabit switch will be a good choice... If not, the Internet bandwidth will be your Gigabit network bottleneck..
The other better option is make use of wireless feature of WRT54G, just get a USB wireless adapter and install it on one of non-critical computer and it can connect to the wireless router, then you will have additional ethernet port to connect your additional computer.
You can have a look on this wireless network setup tutorial if you wish..

If you're looking at downloading while you're playing games online...it doesn't matter what speed switch you have at home, or how powerful your PCs are. Unless you have over a 10 meg connection..even a 10 meg hub wouldn't be your bottleneck. The downloads will eat into your internet bandwidth (which is a weak link)..and also will bog down your router. P2P program bring most home grade routers to their knees..they get overwhelmed with the many concurrent connections.Firestorm ZERO wrote:Well I have a DFI Ultra-D motherboard on my current computer.
