I'm using WindowME and DU Meter doesn't seem to work on it so I downloaded this program called SysMeter which tells me my dl/ul speed but a bunch of other stuff.
Anyone know a program that will JUST tell me my current dl/ul speed. Anything like DU Meter or close, thanx.

have you tried netstat live? its from analogX. you can tell it to show you only the information you want to see, and not show the rest.
here's what it looks like when it is showing a bunch of stuff http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/008771.html . like i said, though, you can configure it to show only what you want (and the window gets smaller the fewer stats/info you show).
here's a link to the free download http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/nsl.htm .

Smaier, in my PC, AnalodxSNL does not show anything. I mean, it shows something as thin green characters on the black backgrond. With Windows magnigier (2x), I can read some, but do not understand them, anyway. For instance, who are incoming Totals? Is it my download speed? Or something else? TIA.

as far as the difficulty in reading the numbers, i dont know why it would be like that. sometimes the really small text can be kinda hard to read, though. is your resolution set really high? i have my resolution set at 1024x768 (x2, as i have two monitors) and i think if it were any higher, i would have real trouble reading it as well. that can be a real pain in the arse. i clipped the "incoming totals" explaination from my above mentioned post ( http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/008771.html ).
"incoming totals" - i never really use this, but i think if you set up netstat live to start up automatically, you can keep a running total of the amount of data thats been downloaded. some isp's have a maximum monthly download and upload cap. if you exceed it you usually either have to pay for it, or you endanger your service contract.
anyways, sorry about the difficulty in reading netstat live. dont really know how to correct it.

oh, and as far as the incoming speed reading, that will be under the "incoming" field (not to be confused with "incoming totals"). depending on how you set netstat live it can give you a reading in Kbps (Kbits) or KBps (Kbytes). if you right-click over the netstat live window, you can configure it how you would like it. you may wanna look to make sure under "statistics", you have "incoming data" and "outgoing data" checked, as those are the most impostant readings. i just suggest this, as i cant remember what the default setting are.

Thank you, Smaier.
1) Display. Yours looks not much better. I have 1280x1024 and read everything on the screen, but even with the Magnifier I can't read everything in there. I do not understand why they didn't make it plain B&W.
2) Info. I may have occasional interest in numbers (speed). It's like driving a car: I know when it's 25mph and when it's 70mph. I do not need a speedometer.
I'd rather have something like this: I open a gizmo and it tells me: "Your connection speed just slowed down becase your OE is still open. If you are not going to send any mail, shut it down". Or: "your speed is slow because a server in Atlanta is messed up. Nothing I can do. Wait and be patiet". In other words, I'd like it to give me VALUABLE info. If it's beyond my computer, I can't do much. If it's my ISP and it's a chronic condition, I may try another one.
And finally, an observation. I had POTS, ASDN. It's RR now. Its speed is the highest, of course. With all three, the every day net surfing has little to do with the speed, wich fluctuates (net congestion?), but is about the same for each mode. Yet there are moments when a particular site comes almost to a standstill. So, I go to another one, come back to the first one in an hour, or two, and it's OK. Sometimes, everything becomes very slow, and it lasts for hours. The measured speeds may or may not drop down. In general, weekends, early mornings and late evenings (EST) are best.
IMHO (Wrong?), the packets (data) travel the wires/fibercables fast. When they arrive at the URL, they may get in and out fast, or they "wait in line". Do meters meter the "waits"? Or just the transfer speeds? From Yahoo main page I click Check Your EMAIL. I may get it instantaneously or may wait 20 seconds, on the same day, 10 minutes apart. Why? I know: life sucks.
