Join SG's Folding@Home Team!

Post by YARDofSTUF »

Folding@Home is a way we can all help against diseases like cancer without really doing any work.

What happens is that you Download the client you want, windows pretty version, or a bare minimum console.

When you run the program the first time it will ask for a username and a team number, the Speedguide team is number 15.

We currently have 62 active users that contribute to the Folding project and 419 users that have folded in the past.

Overall our team is ranked 29th, but falling fast.

Folding is a good cause and can be a fun and somewhat competitive.

This post is here to encourage new members of SG to join in and participate in the Folding team. Don't be shy to ask any questions you may have about it.

Stats Lists:

Folding Teams List

Speedguide Team Page

Speedguide Users List

Our Folding forum is in the General Discussions section and is labeled SG Distributed Computing, link.

Things to know about how the Folding clients work:

It will need an internet connection to download the DNA info that it will "unfold" and will then need the connection again when it sends the info back, it will not shut down your connection, or use it all up on you.

It uses idle CPU cycles. If you open IE and the computer needs 80% of the cpu to open IE without a slowdown, Folding will use only the 20% thats idle. If you are doing enough that requires 100% of the cpu, like gaiming or multitasking, video editing, then teh Folding client will idle, or pause and wait for a time when the cpu is not being fully used.

Please, join us :)

I've heard of this before from various places. I'm really, really new here, though. Would I still be able to participate with your team?

Also, if you have multiple computers on your home network, do they each act alone or can their CPU power be combined to act like an uber-CPU?

Sure join the team #15

also they pretty much act alone but each will contribute enough to make that "uber-CPU" from yours and others.

New people are always welcome! You install the client on as many PCs as you like, you can use the same Username and team number, 15 hopefully :)

Ok, cool. If it's alright with you all, I'll do it. Least I can do to pay back the help you gave me with my 10.0Mbps problem earlier...

Sure you Can!
I used to fold with a Pentium 2, AND a Gateway P3 with the same memory that your rig has.. Every bit helps. :thumb:

Nice post YoS! :thumb: Welcome aboard new folders, always nice to see new faces amongst us.

All of my machines are back up and folding again after my medical leave of absence. First thing I did when I can home, though some delay in sending at times, at least they are working again! Woo Hoo! :p

Did you just join today?

You need to wait for 1 WU to complete, 100 Steps usually.

After you have completed a WU the next time the SG server updates you'll have a thingy.

It'll be as your name for folding in here:

It unfolds the DNA using your idle CPU cycles, if you start doing something that needs all of your CPU it goes idle and waits for the CPU to be free, then when it finishes the WU it sends it back to stanford.

By unfolding teh DNA it can expose deformations and stuff, works to help cancer and alzheimers and a lot of stuff. Anything that people want, the info is freely available I believe.

Can take a few hours for some WUs or a few days for others.

By helping understand how proteins fold, you are helping better understand how to cure many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's, Cancer, etc.
