Actually Is there a program that will rip the video and audio of the main piece into an AVI or MPEG file?

Use DVD shrink (or DVDDecrypter) to rip VOB. You can then use Vision to add each movie as a separate title.

Vision is probably the most simple app for doing this - you may be in trouble...

Don't rip to avi first unless you have to - transcoding affects quality.
anything is possible - nothing is free

Dunno about Nero vision but have you tried ripping out the VOB files and then using DVD Shrink to Re-author and drag both titles in?

I rip out the VOB files with DVDshrink using the reauthor feature, now how would I go about making the mpg file or whatever that way?

I think DVDShrink only works with one fileset (could be disk or folder location).

Try one of the VOB editing tools here - http://www.doom9.org/software.htm#vobtools
anything is possible - nothing is free

In Nero I missed the configure button, I guess under standard for DVD at 5,000kbps it tops out at 3.58 gigs? moving it to high quality got the video back up to 7 gigs. At 3.58 it was way too compressed.

I've been using FairUse Wizard 2.5 LE for backing up my movies and box sets to avi format. You can also back them up in Xvid format as well.

One app for everything. Best part, it's free. :)
