Laptop wireless - disconnecting & saying not connected when it is!

Post by gwc1023 »

I set up wireless internet for a friend yesterday (DSL lite with router attached to desktop downstairs, new Compaq laptop). It seemed to set up fine, but now we're running into weird problems with the connection on the laptop.

On initial startup, the wireless connects fine - strong signal, icon in systray shows connected. But a few minutes later, internet browsing is interrupted by a message that windows can't connect to the wireless network we've set up. At this point we can't connect to the web. Repair the connection and it seems to hang at 'connecting to network' but we are able to use the web. At this point when you go to 'view all available wireless networks' our network is at the top of the list, with a strong signal, and the words right beside the signal bars says 'not connected.' But in the paragraph right there, it says 'You are currently connected to this network. Click Disconnect below to disconnect.' ??????? How can it say not connected in one place and connected in another place in the same window? Also at this point the icon in the systray shows not connected although we clearly are since we're browsing with no problems.

We keep losing the connection every few minutes, and each time does the same thing as above. We lose the connection, Repair, and then it works, although it still shows as not connected.

Is this something I've set up wrong (probably) - I know enough to get most things started, but am not by any means an expert. I'm not sure what other information you would need to possibly diagnose, I'll hang around here to make sure I get back to you on any questions. Thanks so much!! I feel bad that I've set this up for a friend and it's not working right.

I suspect you are victim of RF interference or a bad wlan card/adpter. goto the command line (START>RUN>CMD>OK) and ping your router to see where (WAN/LAN) & when (5min?) you are losing connectivity.

ping -t 192.168.x.y (your router/gateway addr).. wait 5 minutes and wait for the results to chg..

Along with add'l details, post your results.

Same disconnect problem on Fujitsu s6340

Post by rmedia »

I had the same disconnect problem mentioned above. The icon would show wireless disconnected in taskbar but I would be able to access the internet. Only for a few minutes and then it would disconnect. Prior to this everything worked fine.

I found a solution that so far seems to have fixed the problem. I downloaded an updated driver from Fujitsui for the WLAN. I then switched from using windows managing the connection to Intel/Proset Wireless. It is now staying connected and I pick up one additional neighbourhood network that did not appear before. My router is an SMC Barricade.

If you are having wireless problems don't give up!

I'm having a similar problem. My laptop only works with the wireless connection that's setup at home. But when I try to use it at the wireless network at campus (or anywhere else) it doesn't work. It connects, signal is good but I can't acces the web. I'm just sitting there with my laptop, without internet, while every other person around me is browsing the web (with their laptop). Help please?

Intel/Proset solved the problem

@remedia, you're the man.

i was having the exact same problem as gwc1023 on a Compaq Presario V3000. Installing the Intel/Proset Wireless app worked like a charm.

Here's the link to download (Win XP Version): http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_ ... =Go%21#SAP

That should happen when you connect to a wireless network but you hibernate when still connected and bring you laptop to anywhere that beyond that network ( mostly from school to home ) and at home ( or anywhere else ) you have another network to connect to. It''ll make a conflict like that, may be a Windows bug, but to solve this you just disable your wireless connection, go to Change Advance Setting -> Wireless Network tab and on the Prefered network list Remove all the network on this list, OK and enable again it should work like before. :D

I think it's not neccessary to install other softwares :P
