The Davinci Code has got the weirdos mobilized

Post by WhoNut »

The wife got a call tonight from an action group, and the spiel started like this - "Mrs. Jacobs, did you know that this weekend millions of people will be watching a movie that claims the Lord Jesus didn't die for our sins."

She didn't stick around for any more, as his voice and tone suggested an intelligence level somewhere near the jellyfish strata; no fun debating a plant, after all.

Where in the heck do people like this come from, and why'd they call us? It's a work of fiction, for ****'s sake.

Anything that upsets religious wackos is good in my book. :thumb:

Has anyone seen Richard Dawkins latest video, Root Of All Evil? Very entertaining, especially the wackos who believe the world is less than 10,000 years old. :rotfl:

i read the book and it was not anti catholic..it was just a fictional conspiracy theory and i love this quote from the cardinals

Well, the Vatican is so worried about it they're throwing fits trying to get 'The Word' out that it's nonsense...funny thing is they can't prove with 100% certainty what they're selling is the truth either ...hence "faith"

Both are books.

It never ceases to amaze me how folks scream freedom of speech until it has to do with fundamental Christians. It's O.K. to sympathize with a convicted terrorist for losing his right to speak, but those dog gone Christians!

It's just another one of the "conspiricy/what if type of movies that really capture the imagination of people. I find them very entertaining even if I don't believe a bit of it.

I don't think they are saying that they should not be able to say it, just that they think it is ridiculous

Just because I think that it is ridiculous to say Yanni is a great musician, does nopt mean I think he should be jailed for his music (allright bad example, he should be jailed :D )

I understand, but the following statement is just plain harsh

"I hate Jesus freaks!!!! (except Spammy ) Don't those fuc%^rs have anything better to do.... Like help people in need!!"

These "Jesus Freaks" are doing what they feel is the right thing to do. To say they should be helping people is ignorant as Christian based organizations volunteer their time & services every day of the year around the entire globe. I send a monthly check to the local rescue mission instead of my church due to some disagreements and I see my funds helping out.

Catholism, like any other theist based religion, is based on very shaky ground. The Bible and biblical events survived contradictory evidence (from science, historians, etc.) because believers, along with the mainstream, propped it up while it was reinvented. I remember a history teacher telling me that whether or not people believe Jesus was the Son of God, he did exist. People like him serve to perpetuate a myth that's not corroborated by historical fact.

Maybe I haven't been clear, but facts have (thus far) been unable to defeat ancient myth in the eyes of believers. What has the potential to be more effective than fact, is fiction, and that's why the church fears the Da Vinci Code…they know the power of fiction, they’ve used it very effectively.

Gotta agree that the statement was over the top, bigmo.

I think that sometimes, some of the guys forget that this board is mixed. It's comprised of pretty much all faiths, and political persuasions. I wish that people would remember that when the comprise a post.

It's not that all Christians don't know this isn't a work of fiction, but some of them would love to make sure that the general population who shun church, are aware of that also.

I think that sometimes, the less faithful in this country, are fearful that their own faith isn't enough to build their church...... More faith and less crying would help.

Also, kudos to you for standing up for your convictions with your wallet.

Theist religions are the conspiracy theories, there's no proof to support them, hence faith. Every single time science has smacked down religion, apologists simply retreat to the next issue.

I believe it's only a matter of time (although it may take several thousand years) before science is capable of explaining and proving the current unknowns, such as the origins of our universe. While this makes me an agnostic by default, I consider myself an atheist towards all the man made gods, from Ra to Zeus to the Holy Trinity. If there is a God, I'm quite certain it's nothing like we can imagine...who's to say God even has to be a conscious being? I'm also quite certain humans were not created by God and that he does not intervene in our lives.

One little thing though...there have been several Rabbi's who are scientists as well and one famous one was a physicist, it pretty interesting Rabbi who was a physcisit also beleives they dont contradict. That is when I started to beleive myself. He had one of the most amazing insights I ever heard.

Oh, I know several prominent scientists profess to a belief in "God". Einstein talked about God a lot and religious people jumped on it, but he wasn't referring to a specific God and I suspect this is generally the case.

http://www.gsreport.com/articles/art000068.html
A survey conducted in mid-1998, reported by Edward J. Larson of the University of Georgia in a letter to the journal Nature, indicates that very few senior scientists in the United States profess a belief in God or immortality.

Larson said the survey asked members of the National Academy of Sciences to indicate if they believe, disbelieve or are agnostic regarding the existence of God and immortality. Overall, 93 percent of the scientists either disbelieve or are agnostic on the existence of God (72.2 percent disbelieve), while 92.1 percent disbelieve or are agnostic regarding immortality (76.7 percent disbelieve).

Of those who profess a belief in God, the highest percentage was found among mathematicians (14.3 percent) and the lowest was found among biological scientists (5.5 percent). Among physicists and astronomers, 7.5 percent profess belief in God.
The Bible contradicting science is self evident to me (Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, etc.). Some Christians, such as my father, will stress that the stories are metaphors and it's up to the reader to realize the overall message. They do so because any objective look at these stories reveals them as fiction and there has to be a way to distance the message from the events, otherwise both go down in flames. I strongly disagree with the notion that "the word of God" would be littered with such tales. In this regard, I find the view fundamentalists hold to be more logical (in regards to following their religion), even though scientifically, they're even more wrong.

That's not faith, you'd have reason to believe so stemming from those actions. If you've never seen your mother, yet still believe she loves you, that's faith.

While language usage tends to obscure meanings, faith means to believe in something despite evidence/logic. There are plenty of other words that better fit belief in something factual or known. Do you have faith that 1+1=2? Do you have faith that your parents love you? Do you have faith that Jesus died on a cross for your sins and then rose from the dead?

There's quite a distinction.

Not neccesarily true and there are plenty of examples. The subject has been beat to death of course and there is no "one" agreement amongst different beliefs and personalities. What I see as tangible evidence may be discounted as malarky by others. Some will simply not believe unless their brains and minds can comprehend and with some of our minds here, that's not saying much :D
