Earthlink DSL - too slow

Post by dcmod »

I just got my Earthlink DSL installed and it works. The only problem is that I'm supposed to be getting 1.5mbit/256kbit and I'm actually getting 500k/90k. I switched from Telocity and they were faster. I'm less than 1500 feet away from the CO. I called Earthlink and they told me "go to dslreports.com and apply some tweaks". This is obviously not going to make that much of a difference, as I've already done it. Could the problem be that my last isp installed a switch on the side of my house so the fax could be used at the same time as the dsl? Earthlink uses PPPoE and will not work on the line the old dsl was on, it has to be on the line the fax is on. I see no other reason as to why it could be this slow, anybody know what's going on?

Thanks.

sounds like earthlink has you capped at 768 i would call them and have them bump you up a bit and see if you still stay synced up on your modem

it worked for me im getting 888-1.1 out of a 1.5 cap, just gonna have to see whats will work for you.

Where are you located? Who is your telco? I have Earthlink/Verizon and I am capped at 640/90. I get between 400-500 kbps down and about 80 up. Verizon caps the line, not Earthlink and ELNK can't do anything about it.

Unfortunately, Verizon owns ALL of the lines on the east coast. If you get that "voice-over-data" crap then youre STUCK with 640/90. My neighbor has Earthlink also and he gets the SAME SPEEDS that I do, and I have VERIZON :( . Since COVAD is in so much damn financial trouble, they just decided to go with the VOD (voice over data) for residential customers and only use dedicated line for businesses. Verizon is charging them (Covad) so much money that they have no choice but to provide sucky service now. Oh well, the Bell companies will soon own the DSL market and all of us DSL users will be screwed.

Enjoy it while you can. When Verizon completely takes over, we will all get fu_ked up service.

Verzon SUCKS!!!

I just got done today with one doing the exact same thing 500 to 800 down and about 125 Up I tweaked it my way and its getting 1700 down so the big question here is...
What modem did they give you... ?
I hope your not using the USB install
Are you running Winpoet if so its junk on a Earthlink connection..But good for newbe's
There are options on that either RASPPPoE or this newly updated Enternet progy here http://microsyspro.com
Are you on a eastern state where Verizon is
If so you may be capped by verizon at 640Kbps
If I dont make it back email me as long as we post the results on here later..
Is the FAX running 24/7 ?

Yes, I am in an eastern state, but I was getting faster than 640k before, I was getting 800k. It does use PPPoE, but I do not use the Earthlink software, I have a Linksys router which handles that. They gave me the Westell modem, it's all through ethernet.

So I'm assuming your on Covad..

Did you update to the new Firmawre I mean the real new firmware that fixed the MTU on PPPoE chk the comments on it here http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000328
Also You probably don't have this link but you can check status for our backbone and it looks like there may be work in PA http://help.mindspring.com/netstatus/index.php3?sort=network&retired=N
Also try this Rwin 371712 I know its high but it works on our DSL lines...
Make sure the MTU in the machine is between 1492 and 1476 but not over 1492

Make sure you scroll all the way down on the second link :)
