Burning DVD with Nero, goes very slow? how to improve speed?

Post by drdoug99 »

I notice when I burn a DVD, whether data DVD or a DVD movie, Nero shows it going at 1x speed, even though I have 16x media and a 16x burner, and I select burn at 16x speed. Now I know it's not going to burn at 16x really, but it should be a lot faster then 1x.

any ideas on what to do to help speed? Usually when I burn I don't have any programs going besides Folding, and I tried stopping Folding and any other programs, and last night it starting to burn at 16x, but then went down to 1x - 3x after 5 seconds....it's constant for every DVD all the way through.

I use Memorex DVD-R media.. Lite ON 1693s DVD drive.

are you sure its not in PIO mode? PIO mode is very slow and sometimes a DVD burner sets itself to that if there are errors. It should be in DMA mode. To change it right click my computer, properties, click the hardware tab, then device manager. Then expand IDE/ATA. I don't know your setup of your drives but in my case I have my cd/dvd drives on the secondary IDE channel so I would right click that, properties, advanced settings and change PIO if its there to DMA if available. If you dont see PIO check the others and switch them. Restart and try again.

Explain your hw config - are the source drive and DVD burner on the same IDE channel? Bad idea...

Maybe explain a little more about what you are burning and where it is located ~
anything is possible - nothing is free

Hello guys,
My DVD burner is in DMA mode..Even then my DVD writer takes a lot of time to burn a DVD of Speed 8x.Note that my DVD writer is SLAVE and i got one DVD ROM also which is in MASTER.So is this gotta do anything?
Surprisingly, my hard disk has DMA turned off.
So do u guys think my harddisk not being in DMA mode has anything to do with the performance of DVD writing.
Moreover,i find my system very slow these days. And it hangs frequently. So i doubt that the harddisk is creating the scene here.
Wat do u suggest me to do?

If you haven't already got your answer:
Turn your DMA modes on in the Device Manager
Window key + Pause Break (System properties)
Control + Tab 3 times (Hardware Tab)
Alt + D (Device Manager)
Tab, type I (until IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers is selected)
Right arrow to expand
Type P (select Primary IDE Channel)
Enter (wait until Primary IDE Channel Properties appears)
Control + Tab to Advanced Settings Tab
Change your Transfer Mode(s) to DMA if available (chances are, it is set to PIO only)
Do that for both Device 0 and Device 1, and repeat for any other Primary IDE Channels that you have
Restart (it will tell you...)
Presto.. you should have your DMA modes activated... Double check by going back to the Device Manager

Hi there,

I also have a Promise ultra133 tx2 card ...running Nero 9.2 I have a LG 22X Burner.

My problem is that I am burning at 22x but it takes as long as my 4X burner. Would your solution solve my problem as well?
