TCP Optimizer version 2.0.2 RC1 (10/03/2005)

We've released an updated version of the TCP Optimizer 2, including a couple of non-essential bug fixes as described below. Note this is still a "release candidate" version of the program intended for testing purposes. The latest stable release can be downloaded here: TCP Optimizer v 2.0.1

List of updates and fixes in the 2.0.2 RC1 version (from version 2.0.2 beta):

1. Fixed the optimal RWIN calculation for Windows 95 to use the same algorithm as newer Windows versions.
2. Fixed the advanced settings "Host Resolution Priority" to display the correct numbers in Windows 9x.
3. Increased the limit of RWIN for Windows 95 to allow for large TCP Windows in "custom" mode.
4. Removed ToS/QoS control box frame from Windows 95 version.

List of updates and fixes in the v. 2.0.2 beta version (from version 2.0.1):

1. Added all virtual NICs to the Network Adapters pull-down menu to account for nVidia and other on-board network cards with non-standard drivers. Sorted the pull-down menu by IP class for easier identification of the correct NIC (external IPs and the most likely NIC should be towards the top of the pull-down menu).
2. Replaced the "NegativeCacheTtl" advanced setting with "MaxNegativeCacheTtl" for Windows XP and 2003 Server (retained "NegativeCacheTtl" for Windows 2000). Note the "NegativeCacheTtl" setting is not removed by the program currently, that might change still in the final 2.0.2 version.
3. Added back the Tcp1323 options for Windows 95, although it is up to the user to update Windows and determine support for scaled RWIN values.
4. Fixed the version numbers to display correctly in the program properties.

Great fix. Thanks! Host resolution priority on Win98 ("current" & "custom" modes) are being read correctly from the registry now.

Just a few remarks (Win98) :
1. All host resolutions "optimal" mode - are still 0's, and not what you want to recommend
2. looks like you "adopted" my preference here and have "custom" values same as the "current" values... I like that, but did you really mean to do that ? ...
3. In the registry viewer - if you can sort items alphabetically - like in the regedit - it may help
4. In the registry editor (edit mode) - there is a very strange behavior while changing values. It is a bit confusing.

Edit - :

5. Maybe consider saving those for later runs:
* In ' latency' - Packet size/# of pings
* In BDP calc - all last selections & entered values (especially the first)
* Last size of the program's main dialog
* PPPOE/DSL selection

One small thing - I noticed that registry settings from previous versions are being left in the registry. Is it possible to have all settings initialized from an ini file instead ?

and questions -
a. does "apply changes" apply to both general and advanced settings ? if it does - I think a user that wants to change only one item ("custom"l) - might be changing (unintentionally, since he does not see the other tab) other things. I'm not sure if/what can be done about that, other then use my "custom"="last-selected mode" approach...
b. how is the "LAN browsing speedup" and "buffer size" - being reflected in Win 98 registry ?

6. A small bug - Advaned-settings->custom->MaxConnectionsPerServer - when you enter any # between 1-20 there is an error message that only values between 21-255 are allowed...

1) looks good, I played with it a bit got the following figures:

100ms = 62780
200ms = 128480
300ms thru 600ms = 256960
700ms thru 900 = 513920

I just noticed something interesting, if you select a latency other than 300-500ms and select ok and then exit the program, then fire the program back up again and click on optimal, the optimal settings for 500ms appear to be given eventhough when you check the latency it shows a number other than 500ms. Small bug if at all cause once you press ok and try again you get the correct answer.

ex. I saved latency of 200 which should give an RWIN of 128480. I went back to current settings, exited the program and then fired the program up again and clicked optimal settings and got 256960 for RWIN.


2) advanced settings host now reads correctly for current settings when I go to the tab; however when you select optimized settings and go to the advanced tab the priorities are all 0 (prior to hitting apply changes)

3) looks good, I was able to go all the way up to 1073741823

bottom line, your changes look good to me given the caveat I did not go to the next step which allowed viewing changes (apply changes).

Is it possible for you to make another RC that fixes the bugs in those two important features above ? I was going to publish a link to your useful software (with a short guide in the Hebrew language and a reference to your speedguide site) in another networking forum/site that I attend, so that more people will test it, but it looks to me that w/o fixing those - it will annoy the users.
