I have a feeling that my type of router i've been using is the cause of most of the lag i've been having to deal with. I've tried connecting my internet directly to my modem, but everything seems to work fine. Then I hook up the router back up and the problems start again.
I'll be fine for an hour, sometimes less, and then out of no where, i'll get hit with a huge lag spike that can last from 5 minutes to a half an hour unless i do something about it. I play a lot of online games, so this hinders me greatly. I have to constantly reset the router so i can get the lag to go down, and frankly i'm getting tired of it.
My current setup is:
Comcast Cable internet
Motorola Surfboard modem
Linksys BEFSR41 v. 4 router, Firmware version 1.04.05
And i don't know if it matters but i'll list this information anyways. My computer is running:
AMD athlon Xp 3200+
700+ megs of PC2100 memory
Radeon 8500 Vid card
Soundblaster sound card
and i forgot the motherboard, but the onboard ethernet adaptor is a 10/100 type of deal.
Thank you in advance for the help.

Are you running anything else, like peer to peer software? The sr series is an older Linksys line..doesn't have a lot of horsepower. Comcast..especially with their "powerboost" that they've added recently..most any router you have had for more than 2 years..will be a little light in the CPU and RAM area..and a bottleneck. Especially if you run any peer to peer software.
Things to try with your current router...latest firmware, give it a factory reset, power off your modem for a few minutes so it forgets the MAC...manually set your MTU on the router to 1500..and see how it goes.
If you're into gaming...DLinks 4000 series routers seem to be very well liked for speed.
