Pipex 2Mb DSL PPPoA connection help

Post by wingedwraith »

Hi,

I've tried running the IP Optimiser with the options set below, however when I originally installed it seem to set the max speed at 3Mb when my connection is 2Mb, at 3 and 2.5Mb it sets the MTU to 1500 whereas with the current 2Mb it sets to 1496 and the RWIN value now doesn't seem to line up with what the Speedguide web analyser is suggesting.

I'm relatively new to all this so nice and easy please ;)

Results as follows:

TCP options string = 020405b00103030101010402
MTU = 1496
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1456
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1456, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 129584
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2)
Unscaled Receive Window = 64792

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
512512 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256256 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128128 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64064 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 5183.36 kbps (647.92 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2073.344 kbps (259.168 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 60 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

End of report

It's a single solution box; ZyXEL 662HW ADSL wireless router/modem.

Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install the mtu is on that modem router if you can raise the mtu to 1500 don't worry if you can't some isp's limit the mtu which i think you know if i interperated ur post right try thease for now

check - custom settings
network adapter selection -
check modify all adapters
maxmtu 1496
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window 52416
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 windows scailing is checked

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need. For a stand alone pc all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer and set your duplex mode to "auto". If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clean out your temporary internet files with CrapCleaner.

5. Power cycle your modem i.e. unplug it for at least 15 seconds.

6. Download, update and scan with SpyBot S&D 1.4 EXACTLY as I explain HERE & Ad-Aware SE 1.06 EXACTLY as I explain HERE to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster 3.4 to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES. If these 2 programs find a lot of things then please post a HijackThis 1.99.1 log for us to look at.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in our Help & Tips page.

8. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it and search your pc for the left over files.

9. Install Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5, it's FREE and uses next to no resources.

10. Do a FREE online virus scan from Kaspersky Labs.

11. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates.

Thanks for that, it's definitely an improvement but no matter what I do it will not change the MTU value back to 1500. It was set at that rate a few days ago but after running the optimiser it now seems locked at 1496.

Weird thing is that there doesn't seem to be any way to change it on the router's interface, I'll have to get onto them about that.

Not sure where you got that RWIN value from as it doesn't seem to come out of any tests I've done but that's probably my lack of understanding.

I checked and all the references to MTU in the registry are 1500. I have subsequently found out from ZyXEL support that this router handles MTU in a dynamic fashion and sets it to the packet size being received. They say it's a more effective way of handling it. This from them:
The ZyXEL P660H/HW-61 and P662HW-61 are unique in that the VC Auto-hunt and Rateadaption features will automaticly adjust the MTU size based on the network path and packet size/length details it recieves. Essentially, the P662HW-61 can detect the type of MTU size that the remote router (or DSLAM) is using and adjust accordingly. Most ISP's will set their DSLAM's to support varrying diffrent types of MTU packet size depedning on what is connected at the CPE.
I'm sure this would mean more to you than it does to me :thumb:

BTW, since your changes the router's log is getting a lot of entries such as this: "Firewall session time out, sent TCP RST: TCP", do you think this caused by the changes made to the TCP settings?

I don't think so this is a firewall issues that not allowing ping or icmp traffic to get though i think, however i could be wrong if you want try int he otpimizer goto file and restore defaults reboot and see if it comes up but i doubt it it's the settings but first for everything.
