reinstalling xp

Post by dcyphure »

i was just curious, how many times do you reinstall and what is everyones major reason that makes them decide to.
i ask cuz i find myself reinstalling almost monthly, its always something, i use acronis trueimage and usually after i use it once the second time theres some major problem, for instance today i install this particular image for 2nd time,(first time it worked great) now it wont boot, go to safemode, reinstall video drivers then its fine but now my games wont install unless i go to safemode first...ugghhh, plus .net framework isnt working with its associated apps....so i'm bout to do a fresh install again and its literally been almost monthly that something doesnt work like it did the day before...why microsoft....whyyyyyy!!! i'm sick of it, its always something different

how come so many rarely have to reinstall? maybe i'm too picky i dunno, if i cant depend on an clone image then what can i do, most system restores ive tried dont satisify me, i try to only install what i really need, i can work around most problems but i get annoyed, what do u all think

I used to do the same, fresh install about once a month. For the last year I ran the same install will flawless results by just having a maintenance regiment that I perform weekly and letting my idea of a super lean process window slide towards better active protection.

For active protection: I run the following

BullGuard 5.0
for Antivirus/Firewall. Bullguard also backups up my important files to online storage in the background.

CounterSpy
for Spyware Protection.

Weekly Maintenance:

1: Remove Spyware; XoftSpy, Trojan Hunter, and CounterSpy.

2: Clean Drives; Tune Up Utilities 2004, and HS Cleandisk Pro.

3: Clean Registry; Tune Up Utilities 2004, Registry First Aid 4.0,
Registry Mechanic 4.0.

4: Defragment And Compress Registry; Tune Up Utilities 2004

5: Defragment Hard Drives; PerfectDisk 7.0

I follow that and my PC stays running for a long time. Just last week I did my first fresh install in just short of a year.

Back with Windows 98....I'd often format/fresh install every couple of months...I guess I'd average 4 times a year or so. Going through many game installs/uninstalls..dorking with lots of different hardware, etc.

But since 2K and XP came out...man, you know I finally did a format/fresh about 2 weeks ago....it had been a little over 2 years since my last one. I just find that NT doesn't need reinstalls like 9X does..it just keeps going..and going...and going. The only reason I did a format was mostly for the heck of it, not because it was running flakey or so. I put some Longhorne skin on...it acted screwy upon the first reboot...so rather than dork with it for long, I just said "Ah well, tis been over 2 years, might as well".

i do good weekly maintancence, i use ccleaner, washer, some other cleaner, system suite 5 for registry, diskeeper pro, swipe pro once n a while to wipe all deleted data, ms antispy, spybot, pestpatrol, but viruses and spyware have never been a problem, i think xp just corrupts itself perhaps i use too many 3rd party apps, perhaps drivers i have to use arnt that well written and eventually corrupt for whatever reason, also create and delete alot of video files, but there are times i do it for no reason other than to know its clean of missed spyware/junk/bad tweak configs..etc
