text field lockup

Post by jeffrey1000 »

Hello,
I have RR Cable and am mostly happy. 2 days ago, everytime I enter info into a text field(search page, etc.) the connection 'hangs' for about 30 seconds and then goes through. I have a second computer here on RR through a hub and all is well with it. I tried reloading IE5, RR software, and all the patches here. Nothing. Any help???

Hmm, not sure if this will help, but try removing and reinstalling TCP/IP and ur NIC.

Thanks for the suggestion, but after reinstalling the problem remains. Interestingly, the same time this problem occurred my computer started locking up at shutdown/restart. It goes to the 'windows is shutting down' screen and locks. When I uninstalled the TCP\IP and NIC and restarted, it didn't happen. Now it does again after reinstalling the NIC and TCP/IP. Coincidence? This did occur a few weeks ago and I reformatted the HD and the problem was solved. I do not wish to again but......

Sounds like a hardware conflict or maybe IRQ conflict. Try moving ur NIC to a diff PCI slot.

I was doing that when you replied. It did not work either. Do you think it is a hardware conflict(IRQ) or problem (bad NIC, etc)? I have a couple of other NICs lying around, I think I will replace my current one and see if that helps. The fact that reformatting solves the problem makes me think it is not. I am thinking of reinstalling 98SE without reformatting. I got WindowsME last week but have not installed it yet. Does anyone know any reason NOT to do so(bugs, Cable modem conflicts, performance issues, features, etc.) Is ME just 2000 with a bunch of new drivers added? Will I lose any features I currently have in 98SE? Do all programs that work with 98 also work with ME or is it just essentially NT 5.0 with a fancy name? Thanks in advance.
