After months of tweaking is this the best I can get?

Post by unherd »

Ever since I stumbled upon these tweaking forums I have been applying them. I've finally got to the point where I have to ask if these are the best settings that will yield me the best results?

I have DSL, my ISP is Bellsouth - 1500/256

My average speed from Speakeasy/Cleveland is 1157 down, not too concerned with U/L speed.

My O/S is XP

TCP/Analyzer below:

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 020405ac0103030201010402
MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 192512
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits (scale factor of 4)
Unscaled Receive Window = 48128

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 7700.48 kbps (962.56 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 3080.192 kbps (385.024 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 55 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

My current Cablenut settings are the suggested tweaks for the Cablenut update of [DSL PPPoE 1500/256]

DefaultReceiveWindow = 192512
DefaultSendWindow = 32768
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitOnReceives = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 63888
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfOpenRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1452
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1452
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 63888
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92

Thanks for any suggestions, AC

Thanks for the reply.

I have a Westell Wirespeed modem with the latest drivers.

I can't remember how far I am away from the Central office, how do I find that out?

As far as the wiring goes, I've upgraded the wiring as mentioned in the DSL wiring tweaks but only the wiring to my modem. I wired Cat 5 from the service box to the distribution box and then Cat 5 all the way to my modem. But I think that the other old wiring to the other phones may be hindering some performance. =)

I will change those settings that you recommended and get back with you. Thanks again.

Thanks for the link, if Covad is who bellsouth goes through then I'm 14,964ft away from the C/O.

After retesting, it's pretty much the same results after changing the values you suggested - 1158 down. I remember clicking on a link that contained a large file that you can partially download. This enabled me to see where abouts my speed tapped out. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks, AC

Capitalizt please start a new thread what you did is considered is rude please start a new thread thanks

unherd hmm are you using usb to connect to your modem also what state do you live in it could be you are testing from a site that is not that close to you which would give you poor resaults.

No sir, I'm connected via ethernet. I live in Kentucky. I'm assuming the Cleveland test site is Ohio, I didn't see anything that was based in Kentucky as far as test sites went. Thanks for your continued help, AC

Capitilizt, that was rude posting that you're wanting more speed above 300-425kbps when I'm stuck with a wimpy 137-155kpbs. He he just kidding =)

there is more reasons then you think about that rule

Try this and see if it helps i ran into this one with bellsouth b4

select - dsl ppoe
check - custom settings
network adapter selection -
check modify all adapters
maxmtu -1454
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window leave Blank
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 windows scailing is checked

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections -

LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in Read1st link.

8. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it then visit Zonelabs.com for further instructions on removing it's left over junk.

9. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ (http://www.agnitum.com) or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ , both have FREE and Pro versions and are heads above ZA.

10. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one IMMEDIATELY, AVG 6.0 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php is an excellent FREE AV app.

11. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

I'm sorry mccoffee, I don't mean to sound like a newb but those settings that you recommended, are those adjustments to be done using TCP Optimizer? Thanks again, AC

yes i've read and forgot that bell south uses the 1454 mtu value

the optimizer adjusts mtu cablenut is just everything but take another analyzer after you made the changes to see the mtu i would give you the rest of the settings.

Hmmm....should I raise the MTU in TCP Optimizer to 1462 in order to get it to read a 1454 MTU?

Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; MSN 9.0;MSN 9.1; MSNbMSNI; MSNmen-us; MSNcOTH; MPLUS)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 0204057e0103030201010402
MTU = 1446
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1406
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

517408 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
258704 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)

64676 (MSS x 46)
