Wireless connection unavailable

I just bought a HP pavilion today and I can't get it to detect my wireless router. Computer is running WinXP. My housemate laptop works fine on network. I went into 'wireless network connection properties' and clicked the 'add' tab then entered the SSID. Is there anything else I'm supposed to do? Where do I enter the channel? I am using at Linksys wireless router.

Yes, it's a wireless g adapter built into computer. It is has also been enabled. I just can't get it to recognize the router signal.

Assuming you have downloaded the XP service pack 2, use the new wireless network setup wizard.
It's easy to follow and should get you up right away.

I have also experienced the same problems with a centrino wireless set-up (HP Compaq NX5000 Laptop) and Linksys WAG54G Router. The centrino refused to talk to the router - what we didn't realise was that at the top of the notebook there is an aerial button to activate the centrino. Press this and you will instantly activate the centrino and a blue light will appear on the bottom left corner of the notebook. After that it should locate the router with no problem.

Access your routers control panel from your browser. Something like http://192.168.1.1 (at least for linksys). See if any settings need to be changed or modified to allow your new computer access.

im having a similar problem but with the b stuff.

i have a belkin wireless roughter and a netgear card for the laptop,

my dad has had it working at his brothers but never with this roughter or at this house..

when i plug in the cable from my modem into the back it lights up the wan light and not the connected light? why is this?

I have noticed on a few occasions when using the Windows wireless configuration (and network cards and router from different companies) that the wireless computer will not detect the router when the SSID is not being broadcast.
We set it up and it ran OK, then stopped broadcasting the SSID - it continued to work OK for a day or two, then couldn't find the router, even with "repairing" etc. The second we started broadcasting the SSID again, we had instant recognition.

I've never had a problem disabling SSID Broadcast, after it was setup initally..

anyways, I wouldn't worry about disabling it in the first place.
just turn on WEP or WPA (if you want)
change the default PW of the router.

lock the network down to only the MAC Addresses that need wireless access and you should be good to go.

Many cable modems bind to the network adapter's MAC address, so you usually have to reboot (uplug) the modem before it would work with another device.
