These seem to be popular. Any comments? Or even better surround sound speakers out there?

If you've got $350 or so then I would suggest the Logitech Z-680 speakers or the Kilpsh [spelling] Promedia Ultra speakers. One of the cheaper Logitechs like the Z-640 set would be fine also. Shop around. Compusa and Best Buy both have a great speaker selection. Let us know what you chose and how they sound to ya!! :thumb:
Lets see how deep the rabbitt hole goes. I want both the red and the blue pill just to be different.

Klipsch will blow logitechs away and will more than likely sound better than those Altec Lansings.

Most definitely, and for a lower price as well. Just go on E-bay and look around. I'm a garage sale junkie (it's cheaper than most other activities, I get excercise biking around, and I come away with cool stuff) and I have found a great setup for an even BETTER price:
Advent (model II?) Speakers; 25$
Cambridge Enseamble IV Subwoofer: 20$
KLH center channel speaker: 5$
Audioreflex (high-end JVC spinoff) rear-channel speakers:10$
The speakers come only to 60$, and this may beat even the Kilpsh speakers. Of course, you need a 5.1 reciever; but even if you pay 150$ for one new you would still come out ahead. But....let's look at ebay:
ONKYO 5.1 SurroundSound Digital Amplified reciever: 80$ Buy-It-Now.
Then, add a 5$ S/pdif cable (this is a digital 5.1 cable and connects to most motherboards and soundcards) and you're ready to go.
Oh, and a word of advice: If you do'nt have an amazing soundcard already, and intend to use 300$+ speakers, GET ONE. These speakers will do you no good without the proper interface, and a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS is only about 70$ nowadays.
Just some words of (mis?)advice,
Cheesehead.

I second the Logitech Z-640's. They put out an awesome sound for the price. I paid $60 for mine, and they're down to $51.99 now on Newegg.

I third. They are very nice speakers for the price. Unless you're doing a surround-sound Home-Theatre PC setup, these are the way to go for low price.
If you want a home theater setup, or something that's really awesome....go Onkyo. Lots of folks make nice speakers, but from what I have heard, these things are pretty darn good.
The Kilpsch speakers are most likely very nice, but I would'nt buy them. You can get speakers nearly as good, but at half the cost.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I have a SB Live sound card. Does it matter if the speakers are 5.1 or 7.1?

I know the live card won't do 7.1........and someone will have to chime in if it even does 5.1

Yes, the SB: Live! card does 5.1. If you're not using your computer for anything fancy, the Z-640's would be a good way to go, although the Z-680's are'nt bad either.

Those are supposed to be awesome. That's what Maximum PC used in their Dream Machine '04. Good choice.

Guys got another question of you don't mind. When I read reviews on this system, about half of them said you need an optic cable for pc sound card use.

Source Inputs
(1) digital optical for DVD or CD player, PlayStation 2, Xbox*, or PC sound card (requires optical cable, sold separately)
(1) digital coaxial for DVD or CD player, or PC sound card (requires coaxial cable, sold separately)
(1) 6-channel direct (3 stereo-mini connectors) for 2-, 4-, or 6-channel PC sound cards
(1) Analog stereo-mini for portable CD, MP3, or MiniDisc® player

Is this what I need?
