EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS!! ITS ABOUT CABLE MODEMS AND ETHERNET CARDS PROBLEMS

Post by bobby123456789 »

I just recently got road runner internet cable service. ANd for the longest time it was disconnecting me every friggin 10 minutes
my downloads sucked and i had no idea what to do. I AM running windows 2000 professional edition. ROad runner was slow and my downloads sucked. I was using an ethernet 10/base t LAN CARD. I had checked all my connections. I EVEN RAN a new cable from the cable modem to the outside of the house to the box!!!!!!!! ANd everything was still slow and kicking me off. I tried software patches, windows updates, hardware upgrades, new cables everything and it still sucked. I even called technical support!!!!!!!

WANNA know the slotution?????????

10/100 PCI NETWORK CARD.

thats it right there. i popped one of those suckers in and it works AWSOME

I CHOse the intel PCI 10/100 ethernet card.
AND BELEIVE ME IT WORKS GREAT
I have had no problem, downloads fast, and it was simple to install. The intel PCI ethernet card was easy to install and works on all new windows ITS GREAT i recommend it to anyone.

Once again thanks for everyones help when i was trying to reslove this problem.

send me some feedback on what you all think of this PROBLEM that got solved.
Yes thats my reflection....

That's way cool of you to post the solution of your problem. Most people, when there problem is fixed, just leave it at that and never post the solution.

Thanx for the tips man and welcone to SG!

Your original NIC was probably defective. A 100mbps NIC has no advantage over a 10mbps NIC when used w/ a cable modem, as cable systems are currently limited to 10mbps.

Agreed. The "100" part for right now is only for LAN use. Regardless, the previous card may have been bad and causing his problems.

Nice to hear that this one wasn't the fault of the cable company or do you think they shoyuld have resolved this issue for you?

i feel that the cable company did not provide proper technical support on this issue. I called them at least 40 times. Howver duing installation the cable company (time warner) was in a rush and did not properly check all configuration when the installation was completed. I did find out this problem on my own, howver i still feel that this issue should have been resloved through the time warner technical support.

I have Cox@Home all set to give me a new NIC card but I was wondering if I would be better off buying one on my own... I requested that they give me a better brand than the DLINK I suggested a 3Com or maybe an Intel but they said that I'll get whatever is on hand. i.e. I'll get one of the ones from the big bulk order they probably made from DLink.
If I decide to spend my own $$$ for a better NIC if they won't give me one, I wonder if the lesser-quality NIC could be considered a bottleneck...
What exactly are the symptoms of a failing NIC anyway? I have been experiencing stalled pages, intermittant connections, and an inability to log into the network w/in 5-30 minutes of normal usage. Rebooting the PC clears the problem right up. Is a NIC card capable of full-bore usage then sudden shutdown followed by normal operation after a reboot?

Here's some info on dealing with Cox and my experience with a D-Link 530 card that wasn't up to spec.

Hell I didn't even have to ask for a second network card...

The guy that came & installed my cable popped a RealTek NIC card into my machine, and left an extra Linksys here. I thought maybe he forgot to take it so as he was leaving I said something about it, and he said "Just keep it, in case you need it".

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones, with a somewhat responsible cable provider :)

Real Tek and D-link may be the same thing. I bought a D-Link for my friends box and after a clean install of win2k I noticed windows 2000 thinks its a real tek. It installed all the real tek drivers and the nic works fine.

DDELFIERRO, check Device Manager for conflicts. If none exist, try a different NIC.

I know that I have a DLink DFE 530TX... Well, I know that I at least have a box for one.
Funny thing though... I run a winipcfg and it shows it as a VIA PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. Uh, is this a problem? Is DLink a VIA brand card or should it read DLink Ethernet adapter? Maybe that could be my problem.

No name brand NIC cards cost maybe $10 ea. in bulk. At a transfer speed of 2 or 3Mbits MAX, I think any card will do. PCI, what ever! In the world of MS, do you have the right drivers is the big question.

I have found that drivers ebing a HUGE deal when it comes to windows. I mean if there is one little number or driver out of place. You can forget you will get poor performance and your computer will let you know it too!!!!!!!!!!!
