Windos XP Logon Screen Blank

Post by glears »

This is a weird one. I had problems with my USB scanner. I tried to re-install the drivers but was unsuccessful. I went though Add New Hardware and let it detect the scanner, which it did not. The New Hardware Detection was taking a long time so I hit cancel then rebooted, as cancel did not work.

Now, when I reboot, everything looks fine with a Welcome to Windows XP screen, then it goes blank. No Logon screen. Here is the weird part of it. If I plug a USB device in any connections and then disconnect it, the logon screen shows up. If I reboot, the same thing keeps happening. Does anyone have a clue what's going on and how I can fix it?

Who knows, but what I'd do (if I had it enabled) was use system restore or run the add hardware wizard and let it complete this time.

After my last experience with System Restore, I'm not crazy about using it again. But I did correct it last night. I unplugged every devices that were USB(Keyboard,Mouse, Joystick, Scanner) and used non-USB Keyboard and mouse to boot. This corrected the problem. I plugged my devices back in and all worked fine except for the scanner which did not work in the 1st place.

Try installing the software before connecting the device and turn off the system.
Reboot after plugging in the scanner.
