I seem to be having a problem in XP Pro. I have 512MB of RAM which is sufficient most of the time for what I need to do, but when I run programs and the amount of RAM free drops, it never seems to go back up to what it was before I started using the computer. Most of the time this isnt a problem, but after a few days out of 512 I may have 170-190 free while running nothing, whereas when I restart the computer I will have 310 free or so. This is all according to the windows up Task manager. I definately notice a slow down when the amount of RAM free is way down there. So my question would be, what is causing this to happen, and is there any way to fix it. Could there be something wrong with the RAM physically or is this a software issue.
Thanks for the help,
Matt

memory problem
Windows has not yet detected a keyboard. Press any key to continue.
I have 512 MB ram and after a fresh boot I have about 430 MB free. Likely your problem is two fold:
1 Your system is not optimized, it's probably loading unnecessary Services and processes at system start up.
See http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
And also use MSCONFIG to eliminate others from loading at start up.
2 You probably have programs that 'leak memory'. These are programs that when closed remain partially resident in memory and continue to require more memory to remain resident. Outlook Express is a big memory leaking program, as are Paint Shop Pro, camera & scanner software, and most all chat programs except earlier versions of icq.
The way to handle these poorly coded memory leakers is to end their process using task manager when you have finished using the program, or get rid of some of them and replace them with better apps.
Here's a test - Open Outlook or Outlook Express and keep it minimized and don't reboot for 3 days and watch your memory disappear!
