Problem with DSL

Post by Dmitry »

A couple of days ago I started having a problem with DSL connection. I can connect but the connection is very slow (slower than a dial-up). Sometimes, after I reboot and recycle DSL modem, the speed is OK but then very quickly it starts slowing down, more and more.

I use the same PC/notebook with a cable modem and never a problem.

The OS is Win2k Professional.

I have ZoneAlarm but disabling it does not make much difference.

I believe that the problem of slow DSL connection started after I applied SP4 and a bunch of other MSFT-recommended patches to my Win2K.

Just as a background. I notice that, for a long time, when I turn on the notebook connected to the cable modem, the Event Viewer shows no error messages. However, when I start the notebook connected to the DSL modem, the Event Viewer very often shows errors. The error are usually with the following services (not all at the same time though): W3SVC, SMTPSVC, PolicyAgent, DCOM

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I did talk to the DSL provider and the third tech support guy said that the problem relates to the fact that traffic on Verizon (provider) after the MSBlast was very heavy. And actually for the past two days the speed of my DSL is back to normal.
